We take on board all of your suggestions but are bound by copyright restrictions and our agreements with publishers, these form the boundaries of what we may publish online.

  3. The Fife Free Press and The Glenrothes Gazette

    The Fife Free Press would be very popular here because not only does it cover the largest town in Fife but also lot's of town's and villages surrounding Kirkcaldy.The Glenrothes Gazette although only been in print since the 1950's would be of great interest to residents of Fife's newest large town and also the surrounding villages.

    Thank you for your suggestion. The good news is that The Fife Free Press, & Kirkcaldy Guardian. fits with our criteria for inclusion. 1900 – 1945 have been added to our digitisation plan. Hurrah!
    Please note that due to a huge number of titles and years on our digitisation plan, it is extremely difficult for us to say when the first issue will make it through the ‘digitisation sausage machine’ and on to the British Newspaper Archive.

    Regarding, the Glenrothes Gazette, unfortunately due to copyright and IPR restrictions (and that’s provided we have an agreement in place with the publisher!), we can currently only digitise up to the early 1950s. For that reason, we’ll have to leave out the Glenrothes Gazette as a possibility for digitisation.

    This is my local paper and its back numbers are used by myself and many other local historians as it holds a wealth of information on the area around Hemel Hempstead frm 1850. It is still published.

  9. Irish Tribune

    This was the first newspaper printed in England for Irish Catholics. Published weekly by Charles Diamond in Newcastle upon Tyne between December 1884 and December 1895, the Irish Tribune claimed a readership of 4,000,000 Irish Catholics living in England, mixing local Catholic and Nationalist news, with tales from Irish history, fiction and fashion. The British Library holds almost 600 editions of this key source for the study of Irish Catholics in England in the nineteenth century.

  12. Leigh Chronicle

    Exceptional Lancashire newspaper very rich in historical content c/w special detailed feature sections on local industries and historical contributions by local historians. Also has an annual 'Diary of Local Events' which lists the key events of the previous year. I've spent hundreds of hours reading this publication and can vouch for it as being essential local reading. It ran from c. 1857 until the early 1960's.

    Hi Jane
    Thank you for the suggestion. We have investigated this title and have some good news for you – Halstead Gazette fits with our criteria and The British Library have sufficient holdings! We have now added it to our lengthy digitisation plan for the years 1857-1871. We have had to limit to 1871 due to current copyright restrictions with the rightsholder.

    We aim to get the best geographical coverage of the UK and will of course continue to add titles from all regions of the UK – including smaller locales.

    Please keep an eye on our newsletters and social media pages for updates on titles which are newly added to the British Newspaper Archive – i.e. truly hot off the digital press!

    A short-run regional newspaper between 1813-1815 that was notorious for countering the rival Nottingham Review. I understand the BL has the full run of this paper.
