The OCR - warts and all! - enables pages to be found - but when the PDF is downloaded it is just an image with no underlying OCR layer. Can the OCR not be included in the PDF?23 votesOpen - Under review · AdminThe British Newspaper Archive (Head of Data Development, The British Newspaper Archive) responded
We’ll find out how hard this is to do
It would be much better if you could hover over an entry after a search and have a small preview pop up showing the context of the match to your search criteria. This would be highly effective in reducing the number of "red herring" matches that you often have to go through.53 votes
The existing OCR is poor. Many words are garbled, rendering search results meaningless77 votes
Some search systems have commands like NEAR4 to find two words with four words of each other.
All too often a search for two words finds then in completely different parts of the page.41 votesPending - For future development · AdminThe British Newspaper Archive (Head of Data Development, The British Newspaper Archive) responded
We have established a way of doing this through our search technology. Next steps are to start designing a user interface.
Other newspaper archives have a better date entry system where you can type in the year and day and month default to 'Any Month' etc .
One feature that would need some programming work but would be very useful is if I enter the start date as 1850 then then the end date drop down list started at 1850. I might alternative be better if the drop down list worked opposite ways around i.e. start date at the earliest date available and end date started at the latest date available.11 votesPending - For future development · AdminThe British Newspaper Archive (Head of Data Development, The British Newspaper Archive) responded
We will add this to the list of things to be looked at – a great suggestion which will save time for customers
I would like 'Sort results by' to be 'sticky'. I nearly always select 'Date (earliest)' but have to keep resetting after it goes back to 'Relevance'
Why is this text entry box only postage stamp size?13 votes
Sometimes I search for a newspaper title in the search box like Dundee Courier. You should automatically pick up on this and forward me to the Dundee Courier browsing area instead of showing me instances when the name appears in a newspaper. That would be more useful1 vote
It would be VERY helpful if previously bookmarked
entries were flagged up in search results (tags are already shown).
At the moment there is no easy way of doing multiple overlapping searches and accumulating a "superset" of all the items you found, or telling if a new search has simply found an entry that a previous search had already found.44 votes
Like Genes Reunited's Hot Matches. I want to be told when you add something useful for me, so I don't have to try to find it myself.29 votesOpen - Under review · AdminThe British Newspaper Archive (Head of Data Development, The British Newspaper Archive) responded
We will take a look a the feasibility of this – it is quite an Engineering challenge but we already have some pilot projects underway that may help with this.
It would be great if there was a way to search only the newspapers that have been added in the last 30 / 60 / 90 days so it's easier to find new stories.130 votesOpen - Planned · AdminThe British Newspaper Archive (Head of Data Development, The British Newspaper Archive) responded
We have been making some background changes to the database to support this and will shortly start developing a solution.
