Newspapers we should add next

Tell us what publications would be of most use to you. You can be as general (Victorian cycling magazines) or specific (South Wales Argus) as you wish! We take on board all of your suggestions but are bound by copyright restrictions and our agreements with publishers, these form the boundaries of what we may publish online.

  1. nuneaton tribune

It was founded by Harry Fieldhouse in 1895 as a monthly four-page newspaper entitled The People’s Tribune, but switched to weekly publication just two years later. Five years after that and it had expanded to become a daily newspaper, changing its name to the Midland Counties Tribune. It became the Nuneaton Evening Tribune in 1957.

  3. It appears you left out the year 1930 for Aberdeenshire newspapers.

When searching for "Deaths" in Aberdeenshire newspapers for 1930 to 1939, you show 28,329 hits, however, you show no hits for 1930. The hits for the years 1931 to 1939 add up to the 28,329........leaving none for 1930, and, 1930 is not shown individually.

  4. South Yorkshire Newspapers

Sheffield newspapers during the first world war years. Also perhaps the South Yorkshire Times, as there are three titles for South Yorkshire, and all are Sheffield based, whereas the South Yorkshire Times covers the Dearne Valley, Doncaster, Rotherham, part of Barnsley.

  7. Coventry Herald/Standard/Evening Telegraph after 1916/1918

I am researching the history of a country house in Coundon, Coventry between 1889 and 1953, so the addition of post-WW1 Coventry newspapers would be a great help!

  10. Northern Daily Telegraph

This paper covered the mighty industrial North West - there is a dearth in coverage of this area considering the massive population

  12. Mitcham News and Mercury from 1934 to 1964

The period 1934 to 1964 covers when Mitcham in Surrey became a borough, and before it became part of Greater London when the GLC was formed. So please treat this idea as separate to the general 'more newspapers from Greater London' idea. The attached file shows that issues from 1933 through 1950 are on microfilm at the British Library. Note that in 1933, the population of Mitcham was 60,000.

  17. Halstead Gazette

You have covered some of Essex but the papers focus on Chelmsford and Colchester. I would love to see more from smaller towns

    Hi Jane
Thank you for the suggestion. We have investigated this title and have some good news for you – Halstead Gazette fits with our criteria and The British Library have sufficient holdings! We have now added it to our lengthy digitisation plan for the years 1857-1871. We have had to limit to 1871 due to current copyright restrictions with the rightsholder.

We aim to get the best geographical coverage of the UK and will of course continue to add titles from all regions of the UK – including smaller locales.

Please keep an eye on our newsletters and social media pages for updates on titles which are newly added to the British Newspaper Archive – i.e. truly hot off the digital press!

    Best wishes,

    Team BNA
