Newspapers we should add next

Tell us what publications would be of most use to you. You can be as general (Victorian cycling magazines) or specific (South Wales Argus) as you wish! We take on board all of your suggestions but are bound by copyright restrictions and our agreements with publishers, these form the boundaries of what we may publish online.

  2. Mitcham News and Mercury from 1934 to 1964

The period 1934 to 1964 covers when Mitcham in Surrey became a borough, and before it became part of Greater London when the GLC was formed. So please treat this idea as separate to the general 'more newspapers from Greater London' idea. The attached file shows that issues from 1933 through 1950 are on microfilm at the British Library. Note that in 1933, the population of Mitcham was 60,000.

You have covered some of Essex but the papers focus on Chelmsford and Colchester. I would love to see more from smaller towns

    Hi Jane
Thank you for the suggestion. We have investigated this title and have some good news for you – Halstead Gazette fits with our criteria and The British Library have sufficient holdings! We have now added it to our lengthy digitisation plan for the years 1857-1871. We have had to limit to 1871 due to current copyright restrictions with the rightsholder.

We aim to get the best geographical coverage of the UK and will of course continue to add titles from all regions of the UK – including smaller locales.

Please keep an eye on our newsletters and social media pages for updates on titles which are newly added to the British Newspaper Archive – i.e. truly hot off the digital press!

    Best wishes,

    Team BNA

  19. Add 18th century Berrows Worcester Journal

The Worcester Postman newspaper was founded in 1709 and in the 1750’s became Berrows Worcester Journal. It’s “Britain’s oldest surviving non-offficial newspaper” (quote from the British Library website). The news covered is not just local. Could you add some of its 18th century copies?
