The North Oxfordshire Monthly Times and Agricultural Advertiser (NOMT)
The North Oxfordshire Monthly Times, and Agricultural Advertiser (NOMT)
The above newspaper was founded in 1849 by J.S. Hiron, an enterprising printer and bookseller in Deddington. It was an 8-page broadsheet, and was regularly published each month up to at least June 1860, although copies only survive (at the British Library) up to August 1854.
Typical of the provincial newspapers of the day, it carried domestic and foreign news, letters, local news and advertisements. There were well-written leading articles, some of considerable intellectual rigour, on national, local and religious issues of the day. Its motto was "Open to all, influenced by none".
The NOMT is a valuable source of social and economic information for anyone researching the history of North Oxfordshire in the 1850s.
