  1. Just get a search that works

I was searching for "W G Clarke" as a phrase. The problem is that along with section with that name every "W" and ""G" is also highlighted in blue making looking at the page laughable. Writing as a qualified librarian and information professional your service too often is terrible and embarrassing.

  2. I am specifically looking for births, deaths, and marriages. It would be helpful if there were a way to isolate these items in the search.

  3. Republish OCR of Bucks Advertiser & Aylesbury News 1860-1912

OCR for The Bucks Advertiser & Aylesbury News has fouled up. A few copies have been published but most are missing. Those on the system are in a jumbled order. Please republish Bucks Advertiser & Aylesbury News 1860-1912 from beginning to end.
The Bucks Advertiser & Aylesbury News 1860-1912 was the most important local paper for Buckinghamshire. The paper’s absence from the record is frustrating research of this period.
Please make republishing this newspaper a priority.

  4. Bring up preceding/next article

I have found several times where only the text of only part of an article is available. The article has been arbitrarily split by the OCR software. Bring up preceding/next portion of text. I know I can jot down a phrase and search for the newspaper/date but seems a bit longwinded.

    Or am I missing something?

  7. Exact Search should BE an exact" search

I seek the work of an intellectual by the name of Childe. I tick "exact search" I get zillions of results about children - impossible to filter, even if I put quotation marks around the word "Childe". PLEASE make the exact search EXACT.

  8. mac names

When I do an advanced search for a name beginning with Mc (eg McNabb), I have to search as M'Nabb as that is how it was printed in older papers. This has been no problem until this week but now it will not display search results with details from the actual article. It only gives the headline. What have you changed? Please remedy it. I live in Northern Ireland, am doing family history searches and at least half of the names are beginning Mc.

  10. Enable search by paper and date

I know the date of an event and the paper it is in. I want to search by : Hull Daily Mail 1 August 1952. I Thought that would be a logical and straightforward way to search but it seems you don't do it. If you don't have the papers then a simple return stating "these dates are not available" would save a lot of frustration. I have found your search facility so bizarre that I will not be renewing my membership

  11. Newcastle Guardian and Silverdale, Chesterton and Audley Chronicle

This may be easier for people to find if you put it under Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire rather than Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Northumberland. Obviously no-one at BNA realised there is more than one Newcastle in England

  13. A search which allows you to search for nearby terms in the same text.

Search for a word within a range of (however many) word(s) from the following word.
You decide the maximum distance between each search term.

  14. Replace the OCR engine

It's well past time that the OCR engine was replaced with one fit for the 21st Century.
The present one omits thousands, if not millions, of random words for no obvious reason, and not because the image is flawed, and often ignores the column boundaries. On many pages the OCR result is missing completely.
A modern fit-for-purpose OCR engine would make a massive improvement.

  15. Perhaps a search engine that isn't incompetent?

Using the advanced search and with Exact search ticked for Mourne and Croft in "Search all words" and mourning in "Exclude words" brings up no results at all.

I wish there was a decent alternative to your dismal service.

  17. Moving the window "Article text, suitable for copy and paste"

How do I move the window above out of the way of the image behind it? I want to move it onto a second screen and enlarge it, to make it easier to edit the text. It only seems to slide up and down, and can't be dragged left or right.

  18. OCR causes many terms to be impossible to search properly

I am doing research into the early years of The Vegan Society. If you search for the word "vegan", you get so many poor OCR-based matches that it becomes extremely arduous to get results actually about veganism.

I would wager this is the same for a great deal of other words.

  19. When I am correcting the OCR attempt, is there a way of changing the point at which an article starts and stops please?

Reason for asking - I have hit instances where the top of one article has been subsumed into the bottom of an unrelated article, while the second half of the same article has been allocated to the start of a third article.

  20. Listen to suggestions

Listen to previous comments and do something about it . Blaming the print is not an option. After trying numerous variations I stumble on articles which have the my first search words clearly in the text. Why does it miss them on the first search? Now I find that it refuses to find the word it has found previously in any publication.
The Gale Archive was far from perfect but was significantly better than this. I rue the day my local library withdrew it and subscribed to you a service I cannot access from home for free but have to…
