  1. Show new registers how to use their 3 page free trial

I've just registered and for the life of me I cannot see how to access my free pages so I can decide if I'll subscribe.

  2. Browse from issue to issue within full screen

Browse from issue to issue, page to page, within full screen, as if you were -er - reading a newspaper. (A radical idea for software designers perhaps, but not for newspaper readers). The John Rylands Manchester Observer online does this without a hitch.

  3. The addition of an option to refine a search by page number

The addition of an option to refine a search by page number.

This would be of great assistance in refining search results when the information sought is always found on a give page of a given newspaper.
For instance, the local newspaper I view the most has only four pages with the local news I am interested being almost always found on the back/fourth page. And I'm sure it would be of assistance in others ways for other users too.

  4. Is there a way to report bad images ?

I should love a better image of The Morning Post 26 Jan 1904 page 5. The Munro story is unknown elsewhere and I cannot read most of this image.

  5. Year: Local paper:Front page headlines

Please make search engine to find "front page Headlines" yet they won't find a page of Eastbourne Herald or Eastbourne Gazette front page of headlines as I remember one headlined "Deaf and Dumb man stabs in club somewhere in 1970's

  7. Locate position in transcription by clicking the image

When I open a page that has an article in which my search terms are found, I can click in the left hand transcription and jump to that location in the image.

In the image, I can the words that I searched for highlighted in blue boxes.

BUT I cannot click on those highlighted words and have the transcription jump to that line.

Why not? The images can be enormous, with many tens of lines. It seems completely sensible and exceedingly useful. Scrolling down that left column is soul destroying.

If you want me to bother to update the errors,…

  8. Get an OCR that actually works! Can't BNA figure that out?

Replace your garbage OCR with something that actually works! A search for “Shower of Ants in Cambridgeshire” failed because the OCR rendered the text into this gibberish: "Pr.ov Lm CA A phenomenon lin jun occu rredat the • tars VM S orr A closet was &served to be peeling over, w anddeinis to bo eatoulatment of the villagers. It wee .eve to be auto and stattlar winged leant& Pe. pis and the grand snietheved with then, awl they swarmed in milli se. glory step taint .gushed hued ells of than."

  9. Improve ordering of search results by date

The ordering of search results by date seems very erratic. Each page of results seems to be in date order, but sometimes pages seem to be out of sequence, so that (if asking for 'Dates (earliest)' results) the results on page 5, say, are in fact from earlier sources than those on page 4. This makes it difficult to know that one has seen all the results up to a given date if conducting a search over several sessions.

  10. Apostrophe

The name I search ends with an 's' but your search engine changes it to apostrophe s. This bring up thousands and thousands of irrelevant searches. Why is it changing what I type in?

  11. Add a “negative bookmark” facility

When searching, you often find many copies of the same article or advert in different newspapers - and then spend some time choosing the best one to bookmark. It would be useful to be able to label the “rejected” ones so you know you have already looked at them. This could simply be a second type of bookmark in another colour, say. (Even better would be to then be able to exclude these articles from future searches.)

  13. Search again by document number.

I have previously downloaded pages to review later but there wa an error and I was unable to view. I have the number e.g. bl0000438189101220610003 but it seems I cannot search with that

  14. Fix the advanced searching

Advanced searching doesn't work at all. This is ridiculous. I can't find what I am after because the search results are complete garbage!

  16. A clearer navigation route to display individual copies

If one wants to view individual copies of a title, rather than conduct a word search, it's not at all obvious how to do this. There needs to be a top level button or text link saying something like: View Issues

  17. It would be useful to have 'letters' as a category to search for

I think at present letters to the editor are listed under 'Articles' but it would be useful if they were their own sub-section. Would be useful for researchers interested in local feeling on particular topics

  20. Highlight the text searched for in the original newspaper - i.e. don't make us have to attempt to read an entire page in order to find it.

Highlight the text searched for in the original newspaper - i.e. don't make us have to attempt to read an entire page of tiny text in order to find the term we searched for. This is what Newspapers.com does. Look at that website for tips on how to improve this one, searchwise. Look also at Trove for search tips to improve this. So far, this website is poor value.
