Newspapers we should add next

Tell us what publications would be of most use to you. You can be as general (Victorian cycling magazines) or specific (South Wales Argus) as you wish! We take on board all of your suggestions but are bound by copyright restrictions and our agreements with publishers, these form the boundaries of what we may publish online.

Please can we have The Daily Sketch 1930-1960? The one big national daily that's missing from all archives.

  4. The Critic

Can I suggest the Critic, which was the Private Eye of its day. It began life as the African Critic and was originally based in South Africa. It moved to London around 1898. Its editor Henry Hess had a splendid disregard for the libel law and exposed a number of financial frauds. He was frequently sued. A new editor took over in around 1905 and although the magazine became less edgy it could still publish hard-hitting exposes. It ceased publication in about 1915. I believe the British Library has a complete run of the magazine.

  5. Recent Newspapers

Over the past few months almost all new additions to the archive has been newspapers published from the 1980's onwards. The site seems to have abandoned its aim of digitising historic newspapers.
Please tell us why this is so. A clear explanation to subscribers of the selection criteria that applies to updates would be welcome.

A magazine that ran from 1915 to the mid-1930s and printed political cartoons from around the world. What's not to like?

  8. Camden New Journal, Westminster Extra and Islington Tribune

Can you please add these free newspapers, which are distributed in Camden, Westminster and Islington, in north and west London? The Camden New Journal is the parent publication, which took over from the Camden Journal, being launched in 1982. Their website doesn’t go back further than the 2000s I think. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camden_New_Journal?wprov=sfti1
The sister newspapers are the Islington Tribune, launched in 2003, and the Westminster Extra, launched in 2005 as the West End Extra.
    Their website is https://www.camdennewjournal.co.uk/

  9. All early UK newspapers

Whilst its great that you keep adding new newspapers to the archive, I have noticed that all of them for some time now have been fairly modern papers ie 20th century. It would be great to see a drive to add all of UK's earliest newspapers for every county. Many start in the early 1700s, and would be far more useful for my research, and afterall shouldn't we be saving very old newspapers first for posterity before they disappear?

Currently the archive starts at 1793 despite there being many earlier years available prior. Please look to add all the earliest years of this paper.

  13. Lost account of Daniel Medoza's assault on Rachel Joel

Neither the collections of the British Library nor that of others online possess a single copy of the "The London Packet, or, New Lloyd's Evening Post" from 28th October 1975.

This particular paper has been claimed to detail the account of Daniel Mendoza (a prominent Jewish-British boxer and historical figure) assaulting a woman and the guilty verdict resulting thereof. If this archive can locate and make accessible a copy of this account, it would be an amazing find!

  14. East Kent Mercury

There is a full set of editions of this paper from 1865 on microfilm in Deal Library, requiring a personal visit but they are not on British Newspaper Archive. Could this be rectified or is there a copyright issue preventing this?

  15. Weston-super-Mare Gazette and General Advertiser

I am researching Weston-super-Mare Hockey Club from its inception in 1886 to 1939. The Weston Gazette has only been digitalised up to 1910. It would greatly assist my research if the years from 1911-1939 were digitalised.
