There’s not a great deal of coverage for Sheffield after 1940 I’d like to see a lot more substantial updates

I am doing family research for my partner. His Uncle Wilfred Bontoft worked as a groom and chauffeur for Mrs Woolley at Ollerenshaw Hall, which I believe is near Whaley Bridge. Could anyone tell if it is still there and where I could find a bit of history about the place? He died in 1942 in the middle east and is buried at El alemein.
Thank you.

Does anyone know anything about a house called Millbrow on Chapel Road? It is between Elnor Lane and the railway bridge as you head towards Chapel. It is clearly the oldest building in that stretch and we have been wondering about its history.

Hi we currently run The Florist on Walkley Road. We’ve heard some ghost stories about it and they have been described in Ghost hunters guide to Sheffield 🙂 We don’t know much about it but we’d love to find more details about landlords from before 1980’s, some documentation and pictures. We only know that the pub is around 300 years old so loads of history to dig out!

My Grandma lived on Hardy Street in lower Walkley and went in the pub on the corner of Hardy Street and Otley Street. It was called The Sportsman. I would be delighted to find any articles relating to the pub please

My uncle Ken Saul use to own the bacon shop near the Palm Street junction on South road almost opposite the Library. The Lintel over the door had “The noted bacon shop” painted on it. My Mum Elsie worked there part time, I have fond memories of bagging sugar from a big tub into 2lb blue bags in the back room to earn pocket money. The shop must have been there a long time, as Ken`s Dad used to own it before him.
It is now a ordinary house with the shop front replaced by a ordinary window and sadly the sign on the lintel is gone. -

I used to live at 118 Fulton Road from !950-1963, i remermber the beer off very well and it was called matthewmans. there was thompsons across south road as well. my uncle charlie owned and ran the howard hotel at the top of birkendale where my nan harriatt mitchell and mum and dad mary & arthur robinson helped out. i cannot believe looking at the space now that a pub occupied that spot.

I have just come across a link to this page from Sheffield CityCouncil in the 1970's. I was signed on Associate schoolboy football terms with Sheffield United in 1970 on my 14th Birthday. I remember starting to play for the under 18's youth team at the age of 15yrs in 1971. Before I left school in Nottingham in 1972 as an England under 18 International, at the age of 15, I was associated with a bunch of promising and talented lads around 2-3 years older. I signed apprentice forms for Sheffield United in 1972 and within 3 months I had a major injury setback. I spent 2 happy years in Sheffield and I would like to get in touch with any of the lads who were players in the 1971-1974 era. I am also trying to establish whether I was the youngest boy, to represent the NABC under 18 side in 1972, at the age of 15yrs. Can anyone assist me with my enquiries.
