Staffordshire Sentinel
I would like to see the existing dates extended into the 1920 at least. My interest is the effect and aftermath of the First World War on the people of the Potteries.
Dear Readers
We are sourcing what we can from the Library’s holdings and have added 1940-1941, 1943-1950 in the last 24 hours.

Thank you all for your continued interest in this title, and Happy Reading!

I recently discovered died having fallen from earth, which happened in Etruria Woods, Wolstanton, in June 1960 The family story is that he was looking around a First World War bomb crater. I haven't been able to find any evidence of bombing in Stoke-on-Trent during the First World War. Does anyone know anything about this area and what might have caused the "fall of earth" sufficient to kill someone?
Paul Wakefield
Would like some information on a bomb that dropped in Nile Street, Burslem in 1942 / 1943. My father recollects windows being blown out in Harris's garage as a child.
Joan Aucock
I believe that this same bomb did some minor damage to the stained glass window in the Congregational Church, a few doors away from Harris's hardware shop in Moorland Rd., but I don't know any details. The one piece of coloured glass was replaced by a clear piece which is still there. -

Trying to find information on an old hospice/ house in a remote area on the Staffs/ Derbyshire border- near The Roaches perhaps. This was quite a large building, surrounded by a distinctive high brick wall, which surrounded the whole house/ hospice. My grandfather visited this house in the 1970s, but can not remember the exact location or official name of the place. If this building sounds familiar to anyone, I would love to hear from you- any information/ suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Mrs Thomas who taught us French when we began in 1960? She was the first female member of staff to be appointed at Stansfields

Hi, I attended Alsager School in the early 70's (too long ago for further clarification). Anyone remember Mr Boughey's first class including Pamela Davidson, Julie Nash, Margaret Ozanne, Stephen Jesch, David Proffitt, Joanna Abell, Rachel Jones, Lynne Hargreaves, Julie Clarke and Ruth Panter, to name but a few? I was then Jane Brookes and missed the reunion. Would love to see the Sentinels from the early 70s

Just wondering if anyone is thinking of holding a school reunion for the people who attended the Alsager school in 1983 & left in 1988 (or 1990 if you stayed on) It is 20 years (how it has flown) since we started "the comp" & i think it would be a good time to get something sorted.
Also if anyone from the school itself reads this as an ex pupil i would love to turn up to do some school disco's for you.

I was wondering if anyone had any info on a murder that took place in a barlaston sometime in the far past. I roughly know what happened.
The gardener killed the lady of the Wedgwood Memorial college by hitting her over the head with a spade. And his ghost is s'posed to haunt the college.
Now, i've searched every where on the net for the full story but i've found nothing. So if anyone could give me a link to story the story i would apprieciate it. Thanks. -

Living at Linehouses, I remember doing a LOT of walking to and from Goldenhill! Skylarks in the fields in summer and digging a way, sometimes shoulder deep, through snowdrifts up the lane in winter. However, none of us missed a day from school because we weren’t relying on cars to get us there.
Earliest memory of Goldenhill is my first day at school at St Joseph’s on a snowy day in January 1963. Lovely Miss Loftus – our Reception Class teacher – and the smell of hyacinth bulbs coming into flower in her classroom. All these years later, the perfume from hyacinths takes me right back to that classroom.
I remember the hardware shop – buying paraffin with my dad for the Aladdin heater at home. Across the way was a proper Chemist (I remember the assistant was called Judith) but I can’t remember the name of the shopkeeper.
The chip shop – was it Lane’s? As a child I was fascinated by the hand operated chipping machine and watching the chips fall into a big bucket ready to go into the fryer.
I also remember two sweet shops – one on the crossings which we used to visit each day either on the way or coming back from school (I wish I had a pound for every time I have used that crossing) and another one further along on the other side of the road. I think this is a recycled clothes shop now. This sweet shop used to sell boxes of chocolates and was a bit more ‘upmarket’. Possibly because it was close to the cinema. A box of chocolates for a special date at the pictures perhaps?! I remember the lady who kept this shop used to clear out the glass display case and fill it with fireworks (bunters as we called them.) My older brother would buy a huge brown paper bag full of these fireworks and then we would take them home and lay them out on the floor and look at each one in turn. Simple souls!
Around the corner was the ‘dinner centre’ at the Secondary School. Fish pie on Friday – yuk!
Two lovely crossing wardens – Mr Gratton and further up the road, Mrs Embury.
Going with my mum to pay the papers at (?) Mr Scott’s paper shop. Those wonderful comics – Dandy and Beezer on Monday and Beano and Topper on Wednesdays!
Goldenhill – a nice village. Busy, self-contained and friendly. -
