Staffordshire Sentinel
I would like to see the existing dates extended into the 1920 at least. My interest is the effect and aftermath of the First World War on the people of the Potteries.
Dear Readers
We are sourcing what we can from the Library’s holdings and have added 1940-1941, 1943-1950 in the last 24 hours.

Thank you all for your continued interest in this title, and Happy Reading!

Would like to look more intensely at the Evening Sentinel. February 11th 1972. Final Page 8.
A good turn turned into a tragedy at Chatterley Whitfield colliery, an inquest jury heard at Tunstall yesterday. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death on Mr. Frank Wilde, of 94, Conway-road, Knypersley, who died on December 7th as a result of a roof fall at the colliery. Mr. Wilde, who was the Underground Manager at the time, was supervising work on a section of roof that had been liable to collapse. As the Manager Mr. Wilde did not have to help with the actual work, but did so as a “good turn”, Mr. Wilde was placing pieces of wood on to of the Hydraulic Chocks in order to support the roof. Mr. Wilde was heard to shout and try to get under cover. Mr. Wilde was in a sitting position when he was recovered from the roof fall he was given artificial respiration, but was found to be dead when he arrived at the surface. The cause of death was lacerations to the brain, due to fractures of the skull. -

Mr. W. Nicholson age 33, a Jamaican, broke colliery safety regulations and died, a Stoke inquest was told today. Mr Nicholson was working at the face at Chatterley Whitfield colliery when he was trapped by a roof fall. Workmates rescued him but he died the next day in hospital. . -

;My ancestors came from Mow Cop -&- Biddulph,My Grandparents are
listed in the census..My uncle Ernest Evansis
mentioned in the St.Thomas Log Book , Feb 29 1910. Now Ernest was what
you might call a premature baby. He was born in 1917,-&- his parents were
married in 1921.Because of this situation, Ernest was raised by his
maternal Grandparents, Enoch -&- Hannah Shallcross. Ernast never came to
Canada when his parents did in 1921.About 1937 his father William Evans
sent him money to come to Canada. He didn't. He used the money to get
married. In 1946 he was working in a local mine.
I would like to know, who he married, -&- who his descendants, if any
are:Oh yes he may have used the surname of Shallcross.
CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP ME??? Maybe the sentinel in the 50s could help me

lived on Mow Cop (Mount Pleasant - Clare Street ) - or 'the village'
from when I was about 4 years old to when I was 18. Left in 1984 for
university and a chance at life on flat land. Don't know why but have
very fond childhood memories of this place. My sister still lives down
in the Rookery. My Mum recently moved back. Haven't actually been there
myself for donkeys tho. If anyone remembers me (otherwise known
as 'Mol') I'd be glad to say 'ey-up scobe - aw -

I am researching my WALTERS ancestors who came from Caverswall.I have the complication of having a WALTERS marrying a WALTERS. My Grandfather Gerald Walters born 21.7.1927 was the son of Charles William Walters & Mary Elizabeth Walters. I have gone back on both lines and have got back to Adam Walters born to Joseph & Sarah Walters baptised 21.6.1937 Fulford Chapel. On the other WALTERS side I have got back to Charles William Walters baptised 8.3.1971 Caverswall. Son of Samuel Walters & Anne. Are there any more Walters researchers out there looking at either of these two lines.

My mother lived in Mow Cop during her childhood and teenage years
leaving to get married at age 21.
Her name was Doreen Mould and still has some relatives in the village
including her brother Bruce.
I wonder if anyone out their remembers her. She is always telling me
about her days growing up in Mow Cop and how much she enjoyed living
there. I have visited Mow Cop a few times many years ago and enjoy
reading about the place via the Sentinel -
