Thanks for all your hard work and really interesting website. I lived in Bishop’s Stortford from 1959 until 1978. I moved to 80 Nursery Road in 1959 from Pinner (Middlesex) and my first school was St Michaels Infant School, (sadly a car park now) and them went to St Michaels Junior School, followed by Bishop’s Stortford Boys High. By the time I had moved up to the High School, I had moved up the road to 50 Jervis Road, where I lived until 1978 when I moved to Braintree.
Growing up in Bishop’s Stortford was great, so much to do and discover. My many memories include the old houses opposite Baxter’s fish and chip shop and a toy shop called Wrights. I would often go into Baxter’s with my penny pocket money and buy a tiny bag of chips and save all my birthday money to go to Wright’s or even Danes for a toy.
I left school at an early age and first worked at S.W.Stevens in town as a trainee television engineer, The Steven’s brothers owned adjacent shops, one sold televisions and radios, the other brother sold music and sheet music. I spent many visit’s going through the joining door and listening to music in one of the booths. I wonder if anyone remembers Vera who served behind the counter. I later worked at Shepherd Electric and Sellick electrical, then worked at Ernest Lake & Harvey Frost, then Boyd Gibbins as a bricklayers labourer.
Bishop’s Stortford has changed much, but my childhood memories are fond ones

My great grandparents ran the Robin Hood pub in Bishop’s Stortford in the later 19th century. They were James and Dorinda Jackson. Their son James was my great grandfather and his son Arthur, my grandfather, used to go and stay in the Robin Hood when he was a boy. After James and Dorinda died in about 1953/52, their unmarried daughter Elizabeth Ann Jackson carried on as a publican in the area. I don’t know whether this was still at the Robin Hood. Does anyone have any photos of James and Dorinda, or of their son James or of any of the Jackson family?

I am trying to find out about the Trestain family, who lived at 306 Mount Pleasant Road Tottenham in rhe 1920s. William, the husband, had died in about 1915, leaving a wife, Florence, and at least one son, Ronald Victor. I am particularly interested in an older son named Percy, who was born in 1896. Please reply if you know anything at all about this family, or if you think you can help me find out what happened to Percy. He isn't recorded as dead on Ancestrys BMD index, up to the 1960s, and he isn't on the WWI medal roll. Neither was he living at 306 Mount Pleasant Road in the 1920s. Thank you for reading this message.

My Grandad was Thomas Kohler, born Dublin about 1901. He moved to London, where worked as a portrait artist and photographer and married Emma Oppenheim, from Forest Gate, London, in 1952. Their children were Leopold Oppenheim (b 1934),Maude E, born 1937 Estelle H, born 1939, Antoinette (1942, Oscar H, (1941), Stanislaus (1951, Ricardo, (1955), and Rhaphael, born 1923. We know what happened to Leopold Oppenheim Kohler as he is my Great Grandad but I have no idea what happened to the rest of the children. Can anyone help please? Oddly, the children were born in several different places... Margate, Ramsgate, (both in Kent), and in Tottenham and Clapham in London. Why is anyone's guess! Any information would be truly appreciated. Thank you.

My grandfather, Daniel Talbot, lived in West Green Road, Tottenham in the 1950-70s. The address is also recorded as West Green Lanes on some of his children's birth certificates. I have been unable to locate his house but know from the 1960 census that it lay about 20 houses away from 'Sprat Row or Suffolk Place, West Green' and also The Black Boy Inn. I have been unable to work out which direction the census enumerator walked, although his journey started at Hangers Lane, followed by the Tile Kilns. Can anyone with a knowledge of old Tottenham help?
