Garfield Road School
Lovely to see pictures of the inside, particularly the nursery. I went there from 1952. I remember the beds. Sleeping in the afternoon! Miss York the Headmistress when I was there. Happy days

Thank you for a wonderful site. I lived here, grew up here. I played on the roof tops of West End Lane, watched the sun set over London, the song 'Up on the roof', still goes through my head.
Every week end I ran up to White Stone Pond with someone's dog, one of my first businesses, walking 'running' dogs.
My family were bombed out of Primrose Hill. A German aerial mine destroyed our house, and most of Ainger Road. The Germans were intending to demolish the bridge over the northern line, stopping supplies and transport moving between north and south of England.
London County Council built three blocks of flats in the hole produced.
Well, the Germans were always efficient, though never understood how to be proficient and effective. A traditional Saxon situation; almost genetic, effective, to a point. -

I'm not a resident, nor indeed have I ever been to Hampstead (but i hear it's a wonderful place!), but wondered if anyone could help me with the following:
In the 1960s my father was a chef, and circa 1963 ( I think) worked in a restaurant called...The four fours or 4444s. Apparently it was a very good establishment, and was reviewed by Egon Ronay in the "Evening Standard". Does this ring a bell with anyone out there? Any help gratefully received and appreciated

I was delighted to see this website and photo gallery! I am descended from the Dixon family who lived in Friern Barnet for some time, and ran a butcher shop there. I have been looking for information about their home for some time, and at last have found some!

My Gt. Grandfather Carl (Charles) Frederick Alexander Silberbach who was born in 1901 in Konigsberg, East Prussia came to England in 1936 and married in Shadwell. In 1944 he was put into Colney Hatch Asylum and unfortunately spent 43 years in there until his death in 1978 My wife and i do family history and a few years ago we found out about Carl but were unable to get his records straight away because of the closure act. Thankfully after many letters from Doctor's, our local M.P and ourselves i had the greatest news ever, the records were released to me. About 10 years ago i had the opportunity to visit what was once the hospital and was able to roam freely around the 'Luxury Apartments' now occupying the site, it was a very earie feeling but the people there were very helpful and sympathetic. I'm sure many people will find this site as interesting and informative as i have

I have just spent hours browsing through your brilliant website. My family moved to Wetherill Road, just off Colney Hatch Lane, in 1938. I left for Canada in 1953. My two brothers and I are the sole survivors of a large family. I have just forwarded them the link to your website. One brother lives in Dorset, the other, in Melbourne, Australia. I know how very delighted they will be, thank you all for your dedication and hard work

I lived in New Southgate (Park View Crescent) and Friern Barnet (Lyndhurst Avenue) back in the 1990s and found it to be a brilliant area. Initially, I was a student at Middlesex University (Bounds Green site - now demolished?) and stayed on for a while. Back then, Friern Hospital was derelict and abandoned. As for Friern Barnet, it is a much under-rated part of north London; ideal for Muswell Hill, etc., and also very close to North Finchley. A brilliant area and I hope to move back there one day!

I lived in Bellevue Road from 1964-1982 and worked as a volunteer on Radio Friern, the internal broadcasting service at Friern Hospital, from 1977-1992. This site brings back plenty of memories! To mark the 40th anniversary of the formation of Radio Friern a number of former members have got together to post memories on the web via You Tube and Facebook, we also hold regular reunions. If you used to work on Radio Friern, or know someone who did, please contact me, as we'd love to hear from them Keep up the good work on this terrific site

From 1974 till 1978 I had the luck of being living at Friern Barnet and work at Friern Hospital, where I met lots of friends from all over the world. I worked first at the Bake House whith Luiggi Gatto and Michael Dinner, and some other pals from different countries. Use to delivery goods to all the wards and met Sisters, Nurses, Patients... Then I move to the general porters department and my type of work was very similar. And at the end I´ve being working at the post room. So, I use to take newspapers and all the letters and cheqs to patients; delivering all sort of documents to the differente departments. This happen 35 years ago, but almost every day I keep thinking of my stay at Friern. I´m honest whith what I´m saying. We used to say

Hello, I remember a Gary Nicholas from my days circa 1970 at the Orange Tree with my brother John (now sadly deceased), Colin McKay, Malcolm McCandish, Danny McCardle etc. If that's you Gary, I hope you are keeping well. Drove through Friern Barnet recently, no Orange Tree, no Triumph, shame.

I am a Kiwi who lived in Friern Barnet on a working holiday from September 1987, firstly in Lyndhurst Avenue, then 22 Friern Barnet Lane and lastly on an estate on Colney Hatch Lane before moving to Hendon lane in Finchly Central in 1989. I returned to NZ late 1989 and had been back to London in 2012 wishing to visit Friern Barnet but sadly never made it. I am saddened to hear about all the pubs that have closed in the area - The Duck public house was the first and last pub that I went to in London when I lived over there, and I even working there part time for a little while - others were the Grove (then an Irish pub) and the Triumph, and I had wished to revisit them. I was also deeply saddened to hear that the Turrets had been demolished as we spent many a Sunday afternoon there listening to Ozborn and having our Sunday roast. I made a lot of awesome friends there including Aussies, English, Irish, Scots and Welsh. I am hoping that anyone I would have known back then will get to read this and if they remember me contact me, especially a great Welsh friend Steven Rigby who I sadly lost contact with. I still miss those great ole days!! I will be returning to England in 2017 and will really try to visit before everything else disappears!
