Newspapers from the St. Helens, Warrington & Wigan area.
This area of South West Lancashire has over 750,000 inhabitants but no local newspaper coverage in the archive. The Manchester & Liverpool newspapers are great for the regional picture but poor on local stories.

How long is your digitisation plan? We have waited over 6 years so far.

Please add the St Helens Newspaper & Advertiser, and St Helens Reporter, especially the earliest editions. St Helens Library Archives have the originals and on microfilm.

From what I can glean this newspaper was a wealth of knowledge for the WW1 historians of the Merseyside regarding the Pals Battalions - their lives, their heroics and their medals.
We have just commemorated the WW1 Battle of Guillemont in which nearly 800 young Merseyside soldiers lost there lives between 30th July and 1st Aug in 1916.
It would only be fitting if this period was digitised for our greater knowledge.
Many thanks

Is there any chance of the Prescot Reporter & St Helens General Advertiser becoming fully digitised?? So far, only two years 1939 and 1874 have been digitised online . How much longer should we wait for more editions? Can you give us more indications and advice on this please??

Would really appreciate seeing the St Helen's Reporter and Star from the beginning on this site. I would like to research both 19th century and late 20th century news.

Editions of The St Helens Newspaper & Advertiser are available on microfilm from St Helens Library Archives department. The first edition on film was 2 January 1864 so has lots of interest for family historians and thiose researching historical social interests.

I notice that the banner of my 14/2/1975 copy of the Prescot & Huyton Reporter states that it is No 7049, and the 117th year! It was once the most prominent newspaper in the district.

Please include the St Helens Reporter and St Helens Star newspapers. The St Helens local history library has these on microfilm so should be easy to digitise.

It is good to hear of your plans for digitisation of the Reporter. It was an important title for the communities of Prescot, Huyton and beyond. I hope you will see your way clear to progress this quickly. Thanks

Some of these titles have been digitised and are now available via the pay site http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ but not via the 'Gale News Vault British Library Newspapers I-V' to which my university library subscribes. I'm not sure of the rationale here.
