Thanks for Sunderland information. I am descended from 3 lines that ran through Sunderland - Alderman John Coates (late 19th c.); The Chickens - Engineers at Monkwearmouth Pit ~1840; the Burlinson engineering line with Victorian foundries and engine works, staith design and manufacturers, etc.

I am doing research into the ships broken up by the company P & W McLellan at Bo'ness in Scotland. I have a list of all the ships starting in the 1890s and among them is the Anteo.
I see from your website that you are looking for information. According to the records I have she was sold by Dg Nautica di Giuffrida on 12/06/1929 and arrived in Bo'ness in 07/1929, the 96th ship to be driven onto the beach before being dismantled.

Great website, well done. I am the Great, Grandson of Jack Crawford, the Hero of Camperdown. I have recently (October 2013) visited Sunderland for the first time. I know for certain that I am the first member of Jack's family to do so since the statue to him was unveiled. The page shows the silk invitation to the unveiling, sold recently on ebay, I have my great great Grandfather's invitation here. He was Charles William Crawford. By then he was living in London.
If anyone thinks they are directly related to Jack, do get in touch and I will be pleased to help if I can. I was able to personally hold the medal shown on the page thanks largely to Pam Tait from the fantastic Sunderland Maritime Heritage centre. A Great resource. My wifes Grandfather was Norman Rose of the Rose Line and it has been great to show the Family details of their Sunderland History.

Doing family history research. My ancestors were sailors working out of Sunderland in the late eighteenth and early 19th century they then went on to being shipwrights at the Oswald yard and followed him to Southampton. Mt great Uncle fred was a mariner on the Algorta originally War Zephyr built in Sunderland by Priestman

I am enjoying reading your website very much. This is in relation to Monkwearmouth Colliery where my uncle John Bellerby was Deputy in the 1960s. He took a party of us down to the training face which was only about 3 feet high. I was sitting under a roughly circular fault line in the ceiling and he told me " Don't sit there that's what we call a ""carbon arse"". I can't find a reference to this phrase anywhere on line and wonder if it is unique to that colliery and whether any of your readers can help.I want to include it in a short play I am working on. Thanks.

Love the site and wondered if any readers could help in my research. My father was John Robert Semens and in December 1962 ? He was in a accident at JL Thompson Shipyard, I believe that a Steel Girder being lifted by crane fell resulting in him losing part of his leg and other injuries. Not sure if anyone else was hurt. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks
