I was born and raised in the Boro and must admit that reading these expat comments brought on a pang of homesickness. You can take a girl out of the Boro but you can't take the Boro out of the lad! Parts of the town are not good to look at but that's true of everywhere. The people and the surroundings more than make up for it. When I brought my German fiance to the Boro for her first meeting with my parents we escaped to Saltburn for a Sunday stroll on the beach. He loved the place and suggested we retire there when we're old and grey!

Does anyone remember going to the Teeside airshow during the 1980s?

As a kid I used to go there with my parents. My memories are being scared shitless by the noise of a BA Concorde (then in the old red/blue 'British' livery) when I was about 3 years old - I guess this was the 1983 airshow.

I have photos from the 1985 airshow which show in the background a DHC-7 with a small Canadian flag on the tail - perhaps the prototype or a Canadian Air Force example. I also remember a BMA Viscount arriving and departing as we stood very close to the runway - presumably operating a scheduled LHR or weekend JER service. The Red Arrows were there every year, naturally.

I also remember that it was during one of the last airshows (1989/90?) that I remember being in my grandparents' back garden in Darlington and seeing a Vulcan bomber flying low overhead - an amazing sight, and the last time I saw a Vulcan flying.

If anyone else remembers these airshows, please share your memories, and if anyone has photos it would be great to see them.

I am not sure what everyone is on about, really. My memories of Teesside are from the late 50s and 60s. I remember Redcar beach, which was mostly filthy and smelly and covered in jellyfish, but still had donkeys on it in the summer. I remember Marske (pronounced Mask, not Marske, for some reason) which had a lovely beach, and also had a permanent funfair thing, and had lovely woods nearby (Coatham, I think?) where we used to go and pretend to be whatever we wanted. I remember pretending to smoke with my friends in a hut in those woods.

I remember going on the bus to Eston baths to swim, because the pool there was much better than the one in Redcar which was cold and scuzzy and falling down. I remember we went to Billingham ice rink, too, although I never managed to learn how to skate.

My memories are mostly happy.

I also remember the smells. It was quite common to have chemical smells from ICI or one of the other chemical or iron works in the area. Sometimes, a siren would sound, and we all had to stay indoors because there had been a chemical spill and the air was too polluted for us to play outside. We never got a day off school for that, though.

My school days were mostly happy - I went to Zetland primary school and I was in the choir, and we kept winning things. We went to Scarborough and Whitby and York for school choir events. I was also in the church choir, of the church next door, St Peters, so some of the choir events I can remember were probably them, rather than the school. I couldn't actually sing, and I can't now. I have no idea why they kept me in the choir. But I loved it

I am researching my family history and wondered if anyone knew anything about Richarson Iron foundry IE When it was established and who by etc. I believe my family also had a chocolate/sweet shop on Marton/Linthorpe Rd and one of my family memebers was the first hairdresser in Middlesbrough back when it was a new town.

I lived at 28 Pine Street w(in the late 60's)with my parents Arthur and Sheenah Pryke and my grandparents Albert and Rose Chester.
My relatives the Southgates lived at the top of Pine Street and my aunty Joan and Uncle Wilf lived a few dooors up.
I played with Dawn and Mark Peacock and Mark Bullock.

I was brought up in Church Lane, Eston.
On the 1950 Class 9 photo, I spotted my brother, John Crosby, first left on the back row. The teacher was Miss Brayshaw.
John also appears on the 1953 photo, 2nd left front row. The teacher was Ken Oversby

I was living with parents in Laburnum Square last brick house next door to steel houses from 1963 to dad leaving in 1990. I was cleaning windows outside when I saw the Vulcan bomber fly over Trimdon on fire, something never to forget in a hurry, thought it landed in the woodland beyond saw then aircraft flying about all day, a friend of my parents their daughter married one of the crew who came to do the clear up operation in 1971. Does anyone know of the aircraft what landed or crashed at the top of Trimdon Village during the war years, dad was on the home guard up there before going to the regular army, and they talked of the plane when I was younger, even mentioned in a book wrote by a Trimdon man, cant find who was the author

I remember the vulcan bomber crash at Wingate. Was standing at upstairs window when crashed. Don’t know how old I was though, .think it was junior school.

Recently found this site and one or two names ring a bell. My parents used to have Martins fish shop in the Colliery for many years. I went to the Parochial school then on to Trimdon Modern. It’s been very interesting reading peoples memories of the Trimdons . Happy days!
