Anyone know a girl called Maria who lived at 9 Berney Rd. Milton in the 60's. She attended Walkers Secretarial College Portsmouth and I think her parents were Italian? I went to school with Maria and she was my very first date! I would dearly love to hear from anyone who knew her then or now and could tell me how she is etc.
Thanks -

Looking for the name of a family who lived in Evans Road Southsea during the 1960's. They had a daughter and a son who was wheelchair bound. There is a possibility this family lived between numbers 11 and 16 Evans Road but this is just a guess. Any information would be most appreciated.

Both my parents were born in Portsmouth & grew up virtually opposite each other. My paternal grandparents lived at No 1 Station Rd, Copnor, and my mother lived at various addresses in portsmouth - latterly St Bernards, 37 Copnor Road, next door to the Hardesty's who owned the bicycle shop. Another great Aunt lived at St Leonards, No 49 Copnor Rd, and another one at 23 Station Rd. My maternal gt grandparents ran a grocery shop in Charlotte street, & had lived at Sheffield Rd. My parents were married at St Albans Copnor, where I was also christened. Later our family moved to Bedhampton, while I attended Kentridge High School in Southsea, then The Priory on Hayling Island, and finally Havant High School before eventually in the early sixties doing a Dress Design course at Portsmouth College of Art & design. My aunty used to be manageress at Smith & Vosper - the well known local bakery chain - in Lake Road. Many years later, when our eldest son had his OU degree presentation at Portsmouth Guildhall, which I passed daily en route to college, and which stood tall among all the other buildings; I couldn't believe how it has all changed - and not for the better! When I remembered the days spent sketching, and eating Verrechia's gorgeous ice cream in Victoria Park, and various other places along the seafront, I was so disappointed and have no desire to go back again!

I am currently gathering people's memories of Portsmouth Guildhall as part of a large project to record and preserve stories and archive material, creating two short documentary films and an exhibition.
The memory you have shared here is so vivid and significant. Would you be happy for me to include this in the project, and secondly would you be happy to meet so I can hear your memories first hand? -

Visiting the website I discovered a photograph of Portsmouth Guildhall which brought back sad memories.
On 10th January 1941 the city was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe including incendiaries on the Guildhall.
On the morning of 11th January my father, who worked in the Treasurer's department, and I stood and watched a blazing inferno with a burning spire toppling into it. Eventually it was completely gutted with only the outer walls remaining.
After the war it was rebuilt and re-opened by the Queen on 8th June 1959 but to this day there is still no spire.
It may be of interest that on 21st April 1926 the Queen and I were born and Portsmouth became a city. Quite a trio of events! -

This area was quit well known to me as I lived in Portsmouth until just after leaving St Lukes school, about half a mile away, although I returned around 1968 .The black square on left of photo was a pub ,and outside most days stood Mrs Harding, she was a nice lady , she stood there selling newspapers, they may have had a shop also,to my right not in the photo(4 o clock) position was the coffee shop, called Verechias you could also have Knickerbocker glory (ice cream type of milkshake) there were wooden cubicles along one side with a table and a bench type of seat and an oval windo in the centre of the back rest, and you could peer along and see other people further along ! also there was a brass bell button on the wall to summon a waiter.
behind further was and is the park where there is a small fountain with fish, also there are large bird cages with various birds and rabbits ,and peacocks. The Guildhall has had the top dome changed twice ,and there are various venues music bands arts etc (I actually had a chat with Bob Geldof around the rear after the Boomtown Rats played there about 1976. Oh just behind (6 oclock )position is the rail station ,the train goes overhead and the road dips slightly, leading to the town centre.
