    So much social history took place in this area, shipping.ship building/coal and not to mention the war.

    This area and its people did then, and continue to do amazing things that have been so important in building the infrastructior of the u.k.

    Joseph Swan (Lightbulb fame) wasborn here and if it was not for him, we would be sitting in the dark. Did you know that Newcastle had the first gas;lit street ever in the U.k?

    The Bulmers of the cider makers, although originating from Yorkshire were involved in the Shipping industry, both owning and building. Witihout their input, the industrialiseation of the uk would not have been so rapid as it was mainly powered by coal. both mined and transported for the North East.
