I wanted to share this after I was searching for pictures of Paragon School and stumbled upon this amazing website filled with history.

My grandfather, Joe Bent, was the live-in caretaker at Paragon School from the late 1920s until sometime after World War II (the exact end date is unclear). Later, he worked at Guinness in the 1950s and 1960s as a commissionaire and doorman, dressed in a United Services Corps uniform, until his death in 1976 at the age of 85.

He was a tough man, with a rugged upbringing in Stowmarket. Raised by an uncle after his parents couldn't care for him, he left home at 14 in 1905 when the East Lancs Regiment passed through and joined as a drummer boy. He went on to serve in World War I, where he was awarded the Victoria Cross at Ypres. You can read more here
    .

After retiring from the army in 1926 as a Company Sergeant Major, he moved to London, where he worked various jobs, including as a hotel porter, before settling in Bermondsey. He and his wife Alice had three children: Spencer (aka Joe), Beryl, and my mum, Pauline. The girl in the front row of the Paragon School photo might be my Auntie Beryl, but I’m not entirely sure.

My mum grew up at Paragon School and later attended secondary school at St. Olaves. During the war, she and Aunt Beryl were evacuated to Chertsey. Beryl became homesick and returned home for the rest of the war, while my mum was sent to relatives in Scotland, which was tough on her.

Mum married my dad, who was from Enfield, in 1956, and they moved away. I’m not sure if they had already left Paragon by then or if my grandparents were still at the school during the war years, but I do know they stayed there throughout the conflict.

It would be fascinating to hear if anyone remembers them. My grandfather bred standard Poodles, including an apricot one named Suzie (sometimes people remember the dogs better than the people!). During the war, locals would bring rabbits and chickens to him for slaughter, as they had become too attached to them.

He had a few close friends, including a couple of guys named Patrick and Paul, who he met at the pub. He even named my mum after them, calling her Pauline Patricia, as he had promised.

He was passionate about horses, placing a small bet at the bookies every day, and was an avid supporter of Arsenal and Rugby League.

After leaving Paragon, my grandparents moved to a flat off Coldharbour Road (now part of the Riverside Housing Association on the Lambeth Estate, which is set to be redeveloped). They lived there for the rest of their lives.

You might also be interested in hearing about my Uncle Joe Bent. Between 1950 and 1964, he ran for election as the Communist Party candidate for Southwark, although, unsurprisingly, he never came close to winning. He lived most of his life around Bermondsey or Camberwell, so someone might remember him.

Thanks for running such a wonderful website! Keep up the great work. For more visit this https://rbtv77hub.app/

    All the best!
