  1. Get an OCR that actually works! Can't BNA figure that out?

Replace your garbage OCR with something that actually works! A search for “Shower of Ants in Cambridgeshire” failed because the OCR rendered the text into this gibberish: "Pr.ov Lm CA A phenomenon lin jun occu rredat the • tars VM S orr A closet was &served to be peeling over, w anddeinis to bo eatoulatment of the villagers. It wee .eve to be auto and stattlar winged leant& Pe. pis and the grand snietheved with then, awl they swarmed in milli se. glory step taint .gushed hued ells of than."

  2. Improve ordering of search results by date

The ordering of search results by date seems very erratic. Each page of results seems to be in date order, but sometimes pages seem to be out of sequence, so that (if asking for 'Dates (earliest)' results) the results on page 5, say, are in fact from earlier sources than those on page 4. This makes it difficult to know that one has seen all the results up to a given date if conducting a search over several sessions.

  3. Apostrophe

The name I search ends with an 's' but your search engine changes it to apostrophe s. This bring up thousands and thousands of irrelevant searches. Why is it changing what I type in?

  4. Add a “negative bookmark” facility

When searching, you often find many copies of the same article or advert in different newspapers - and then spend some time choosing the best one to bookmark. It would be useful to be able to label the “rejected” ones so you know you have already looked at them. This could simply be a second type of bookmark in another colour, say. (Even better would be to then be able to exclude these articles from future searches.)

  6. Search again by document number.

I have previously downloaded pages to review later but there wa an error and I was unable to view. I have the number e.g. bl0000438189101220610003 but it seems I cannot search with that

  7. Fix the advanced searching

Advanced searching doesn't work at all. This is ridiculous. I can't find what I am after because the search results are complete garbage!

  9. A clearer navigation route to display individual copies

If one wants to view individual copies of a title, rather than conduct a word search, it's not at all obvious how to do this. There needs to be a top level button or text link saying something like: View Issues

  10. It would be useful to have 'letters' as a category to search for

I think at present letters to the editor are listed under 'Articles' but it would be useful if they were their own sub-section. Would be useful for researchers interested in local feeling on particular topics

  13. Highlight the text searched for in the original newspaper - i.e. don't make us have to attempt to read an entire page in order to find it.

Highlight the text searched for in the original newspaper - i.e. don't make us have to attempt to read an entire page of tiny text in order to find the term we searched for. This is what Newspapers.com does. Look at that website for tips on how to improve this one, searchwise. Look also at Trove for search tips to improve this. So far, this website is poor value.

  14. Search ability

posted on f/b " by joining The National Library of Australia, we can access through reciprocal rights - to the British Library Newspaper site for free. " Q is that BNA? My response " I wondered that too so looked Judy's Mr J Benstead post up on bna - no results. Just in case went to home page and looked up Cambridge Independent Press - result over 1m entries - whittled down to exact date, just 5 entries and searched each article text - that was how I found it" No sure why this happened but perhaps you can find…

  16. Re-Huddersfield Daily Chronicle

Your detail for this newspaper cites an unknown publisher. The publisher and owner of this newspaper was Joseph Woodhead and Sons Huddersfield, owners and publishers of its parent newspaper The Huddersfield Examiner, 1st issued 06/09/1855, and which became The Huddersfield Daily Examiner on 28/01/1871. The first issue of the Hudds Daily Chronicle was on the following Monday morning 30/01/1871. My Father worked for the Woodheads for 37 years, mostly as Sports Editor

  17. Make it easier to see and read

How the heck are you suppose to read this. The print is way to small. And if you try to enlarge it. Well forget it. I was extremely excited to be able to get articles on my family even if I pay $15.00 each month. This will be my last if I can't even read it.

  18. ability to correct or cancel a search name/word

As I discover the correct spelling of my subject's name, I correct it by one letter and press Search. But when the entire list returns, the old name is still there, cluttering up the list. If I delete the name entirely, it still reappears. Please allow us to cancel or adjust permanently.

  19. Use Google OCR and resubmit all pages through it.

Using Google OCR gives an almost flawless image to text conversion. I think you are using the hopeless Tesseract. I suggest you collaborate with Google, and resubmit all the pages already done, the improvements will be enormous. As an example the Keith Waterhouse column in Daily Mirror 19780810 page 8, gives an utter garbled output. The first section that comes out of Google OCR without any manual corrections is.
    My hit that missed..
THAT splendid actor Jack Hedley, in an interview about the making of the BBC serial "Who Pays the

Ferryman?" tells of the mysterious influence that…
