Setting search options as personal defaults.
Ideally, we should be able to set options for searching withouth having to reset every time we open up. As an historian I find it is frustrating that the default option is 'relevance' when 'date earliest' would be better. Recently, the website has taken to reverting to relevance at the drop of a hat which is frustrating in the extreme.

Make bookmarked articles sortable
It would be really useful to be able to sort bookmarked articles in the same way you can search results. Like a lot of researchers, I bookmark a lot of articles for future reference and find it frustrating that they are saved in the order you bookmarked them with no way of re-sorting them. The search function for bookmarked articles is very useful, but it would be great to be able to sort alphabetically and by article date as well.

Provide more geographic search options, eg by county & by more towns
Search by place include options for small towns like Tadcaster but not a large town like Croydon, it allows search by London but not for counties.

Way better search functions if you are going to charge for your services
Make it possible to search using YOUR digital folder and image number. I have both of those items but cannot use them on this site. Pitiful. My first experience here has, so far, left me with no interest in your paid services.

Switch off boolean search operators
Advanced search should offer a way to turn off boolean search operators like AND and OR. I am searching for an exact phrase that contains the word 'and', and it gets turned into the operator AND every time, making it very tricky to search for this phrase.

Make drop-down list of bookmarks alphabetical
When I try to assign an existing bookmark to a new article, the drop-down list is seemingly in random order (perhaps of date created) rather than alphabetical. This leads to endless scrolling and trying to find the right one - even if I can remember if it exists - and often the creation of similar duplicate bookmarks. Can the drop-down list be made to appear alphabetically, as it does in the side bar?

Add number of matches to summary
It would be very useful to know how many matches within an article there are for the search criteria entered.

The ability to restrict a search to titles added in a specific period is unreliable.
Some titles appear when an otherwise identical search is conducted in two or more distinct periods. (It may be that some titles are omitted but this cannot be tested by the user). The problem was first reported to you many months ago but remains as at 25 Sept.2017. Users should not be reliant on this search facility until you can advise the problem has been corrected.

Edition search
I am looking for an article in the Western Gazette, published Friday 12 December 1902 and was pleased to find it listed on your website. However, having paid my subscription and started to look at the pages, I discovered that this is the "Bournemouth, Hants & E.Dorset Edition", which I soon realised is of no use to me as the article I am looking for relates to Yeovil. Your search criteria do not specify the Edition and the results are therefore inaccurate and misleading, so I have wasted my time and money.

Go directly to a particular page in a saved search
My actress ancestor has 75 pages of results , but when I go back to the saved search, I can't go straight to where I left off before (say page 54). I have to go to page 10, then 20,and so on,up to 50, then forward 4 singly, waiting ages for each page of results to load.(Tedious).We should be able to go directly to a specific page.

Hastings & St Leonards Observer
Please can we have the entire copy of each edition of the Hastings & St Leonards Observer. I am a paid up user and am researching suffragettes in Hastings. However, the site only seems to have the first 4 pages of the editions (1870-1914) that I am looking at.

free pages
I have not yet signed up as a paying customer. I am interested in looking at the images in The Graphic.
In order to test the system, I wish to use the free 3 pages to check the resources for the resolution, colour etc. Past digitisation (especially from microfilm) of newspapers has been abysmal and not worth paying for. I therefore searched for known images. They came up, but when I tried to download the "free" page, it directed me to the payment page. How do I get a free page that can convince me that the quality of images…

An exact search should be just that. Don't revert all capitals to lower case.
When searching for a person's name,e.g. David T Fulton, the name as a whole should be searched for. The name in the search box should remain capitalised as entered.

why can't we now move around the selected page anymore - it just either zooms in or out. REALLY useless and time consuming now.
why can't we navigate around a selected newspaper page anymore? Appears we can only zoom in or out which is practically useless.

Search button
"Save this search" button is more prominent than the "search" button. This means more searches than intended are saved. An "Unsave searches" option might help.

Allow advanced search by county
In the simple search I can select from a dropdown box to search by county, which is very useful. However, advanced search only allows a search by publication place, which is often not as useful. For example, I want to use advanced search and limit it to Northamptonshire, but this appears to be impossible.

starting location for "edit text"
When I do a search the result is identified by a blue box. If I then choose to edit the text, quite often the editing box is at the start of the page and it takes quite a bit of effort to move it into the region of the blue boxed text.
So, it is highly desirable that the editing box starts in the area of the text highlighted in the blue box.5 votes
