How can we improve the way you find and search our newspapers?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.

  1. Missing Pages in Bristol Mercury of October of 1835

    Something is quite wrong with the scans of the pages of the Bristol Mercury of October of 1835. Many are missing, and what is displayed does not necessarily match the page. How can one side of a page be digitized, and its reverse side is simply missing? I could understand if a sheet was missing, that both if its sides may be lost; but, one side digitized, and the other side isn't there?   3. Sometimes the template applied to a page does not match the underlying text

    When I search for Whipp 1 Sept 1910 Portsmouth Evening News, only about half the article appears to be digitised so show article text is not helpful in retrieving OCR text. Portsmouth EN seems to be more problematic than most

  4. I am looking for a relatives death in 1962, but all I can do is remove the years from 1950-1999.

    Why can't I get into the 1960's archives. All it will allow me to do is remove the years from 1950-1999.

    The new results page is not as straightforward to use as the edition pre Jan 2016. The earlier version was much less difficult to use.

  7. Author search

    Hello,
    It would be very useful for readers to be able to search for articles written by a specific author. He is often indicated by a em dash in front of the name.
    Simply searching for the name of the author is not always a solution. I tried searching for articles written by Winston Churchill and had to seek the ones that are not just reporting about him.

  8. Exact search

    Exact search needs to actually be exact and not include variants of the searched words. For example when I search for "Downing" I don't want results for "down" and "downs" too. Case sensitivity would also be useful.

  11. Search on file name

    After downloading the file is assigned a file number. It would be helpful to search using this number in order to get back to page on the site.

  12. Stop automatically changing and to AND

    The word 'and' forms part of many phrases and names. If I am searching for the Crown and Thistle PH I am only interested in the phrase, not every page that contains both words.

  13. Bookmarks are placed in Folders, but you can't go to a particular folder and search

    You can place bookmarks into 'Folders', but you can't actually search these folders individually. A page showcasing your various folders would be handy.

  14. Weather

    I'd love to be able to filter results by weather reports. I'm often trying to find what the weather might have been like on a specific day in a specific place - i.e was March 3rd 1922 war, cloudy, rainy, etc - so maybe results could be filtered to show just those columns and/or pages which have that weather info. It really helps give an extra touch of authenticity touch when writing up historic events. If it's possible to filter by advertisements, then why not weather?

  15. Search facility

    At the moment search facility is only available for publication place or county (or title). By selecting one place or county in a area you are limiting your search and by not selecting a place you could end up with numerous entries to wade through. Would it be possible to add a facility for country ie Scotland, England etc. Sometimes the closest newspaper to the issue did not provide the best article.

  16. Search by title of article

    Enable the ability to search for a word in the article title. Most other newspaper archives have this really useful facility

  17. Wildcards

    I would love to be able to use wildcards. It's so difficult to guess what the mangled version of a name would be.

  18. BETTER SEARCHES (accuracy, control & operators)

    Have an advanced search like Google Advanced. When searching for 'all these words' that should mean that all of those words are in the article not just one of them.

  19. semantic search which recognises surnames, places etc

    The use of "" does not filter to surname only i.e. Brakes search comes up with all references to brakes.

  20. Allow restricting search to particular days of the week

    Restrict search to days of the week eg Monday so it would return Saturday football results.
