Islington Gazette
Or the Hornsey Journal sad to see we have little in the way of later years which is every bit as important as our earlier years. Large enough diverse area to warrant being included more !!!

I lived in Shaftesbury St from 1950 to 67. The number was 119 one house away from Jack’s shop and the post office. I’m trying to find a photo of my old house, now long gone. Any help is appreciated.

Lovely photos. I lived with my parents Anne & George Howard, in Downham Road N1 right opposite the Mitre Pub. Dad used to race pigeons, and play drums in a few of the pubs around the area. Dad was born in 1925 and is now a lively 90yrs old.

Loved looking at these photos. My dad was born 1915 in mount row off east road. He used to tell me stories about hoxton so it’s been great seeing photos of the streets and buildings he spoke of.
If anyone has any info or photos of mount row it would be great to see them. My dad told me he lived over a piano shop where his father Charlie Stevens worked however I cannot find any info on it anywhere. Dad passed away nearly 20 yrs ago would have been lovely to have shown him all the photos on your wonderful site -

I was born in Churbury Street in 1953 just off the New North Road. I went to school at St John’s The Baptist with my brother Steven in New North Road and our family were the first to move into 55 Wimborne Court, Wimborne Street. Mum “Beat” and Dad “Cyril” or “Pad” as he was better known managed “Kents” the newsagents & tobaconists shop in Cropley Street and I would love to hear from anybody who was around that area between 1953 and 1973.

I lived in Stanley Houses, a tenement on the corner of Hoxton St and Mundy St – the little turning that led into Hoxton square – til they were demolished in the 60s, Would be great to see some pictures of that area, also the Lion club (the original site) which was opposite us and Georges square. Had a great time growing up there, it was like being in a giant adventure playground, seemed to be surrounded by bombed out buildings!

My mum Ida Hall was born at 21, Harman Street in 1912. When she married, my grandad moved to 22, Chatham Avenue. We used to visit every Saturday and will never forget how cold and bleak it was but we (my sister and I ) had great times playing in the street. It had big iron gates each end to stop traffic in the “40′s & 50′s”.
Does anyone remember our family? Grandad went to live at Chelsea Pensioners Hospital in “60′s” just before he died. My dad Albert Player was born in Stratford and we moved to Manor Park in the 1940′s. -
