Midland House, on Nelson St, sits on the fringe of Derby Railway station. Was this massive grand building built at the time when Derby's railway station was situated on Friar Gate ? If so who built what is now Midland House, and for what purpose ? It is a huge grand building, and whilst now just mansion full of offices connected with all things ''railway'' - it's hard to imagine that it was built for the purposes it serves currently, especially as the the original railway station was on Friar Gate I suspect when what is now Midland House was built The interior gives the impression of it once being a grand hotel Regards

I was born & brought up in a village outside Derby but have fond memories of trips into town in the 50s & 60s . I remember all the lovely old shops, all gone now- Barlow & Taylor's, Hodgekinsons(?) grocery with delicious smells of coffee & ham, Thurman & Malin(quite posh). Midland Drapery where they had Santa's Grotto every year. One time we took our kids there. They had a rocking tier of seats with a rolling tableau in the front. The lady next to me said that she never thought the shop was so big, thought we were really travelling! Happy days & so much simpler.

I am researching the family history and wonder if anyone can remember Grove Place? My grandmother, Tabitha Woodward is on the 1951 census as living there with her family. She died the year after aged 38 and I can only find Grove Street which is off Normanton Road. Any old maps or photos of the area would be great.

Would like to hear from anyone with links to Robert Blood (c.1864-1948) and his brother Jesse (c.1868). The brothers emigrated to Ottawa Canada, and eventually settled in Toronto where they owned a construction business. Robert married Margaret Flanelly in 1896, and there were six children born, 2 boys and 4 girls.

I have been looking at this site and can see that it will be a great help to me. I'm researching the Bridges family history Belper (my mother's family) and if anyone thinks they may be connected, please contact me. The family line goes through Samuel Bridges born 1951, a chemist and married to Mary Ellen. I've gone back to the late 1900s but most of it needs to be verified. Kindest regards

Please can you give me any information regarding a young woman who was murdered in an around Ashover approximately at the end of the second world war. I remember visiting her grave in Ashover church yard. It seems the man who commited the murder delayed capture by hiding in the Ashover vicinity. He gave himself up to go to war. All this was told to me by my mother many years ago. Can you shed any light on the matter Thank you
