I was born & brought up in a village outside Derby but have fond memories of trips into town in the 50s & 60s . I remember all the lovely old shops, all gone now- Barlow & Taylor's, Hodgekinsons(?) grocery with delicious smells of coffee & ham, Thurman & Malin(quite posh). Midland Drapery where they had Santa's Grotto every year. One time we took our kids there. They had a rocking tier of seats with a rolling tableau in the front. The lady next to me said that she never thought the shop was so big, thought we were really travelling! Happy days & so much simpler.
