More WW1 Local Newspapers
They often carried obituaries, with photos, of local casualties. As many service records have been destroyed, these can be the only detailed record of a soldier.
Dear Readers
We continue to add to our newspapers which cover the WWI period.
We now have over 80,000 issues of newspapers for this period.

We aim to include more papers for this period later in the year.
Thank you for your suggestion

I would like to add support to the idea of digitising papers beyond 1918 and into the 1920s to show the coverage of the unveiling of war memorials and the social issues arising from the demobilisation of millions of troops.

Not local - but how about The Spectator and the New Statesman for the WW1 period?

How can you cover the First World War and not have the Daily Mail?

Blackburn Times, please. I'm surprised that Blackburn has no coverager for 2/2 C19, but cocverage for WWI would be excellent

Yes please. This is a real window of interest for local history within the context of the First World War. We are particularly interested in papers for Welling (papers cover Bexleyheath, Welling, and Bexley).
Please also consider papers for the few years following the war to be able to research the impact the war had on local aeaas.
Thanks -

Opps! I have just realised that the request I made earlier for the Bromley & Kentish Times 1914 - 1918 was an error, as it wasn't called that until 1928. It should have read the Bromley & District Times.

Maidstone Kent and St Albans Hertfordshire have very little coverage at the moment.

Having additional information online, which is all too often 'hidden' in local newsdpapers and only available (if at all) after a long and tedious search on a library/record office microfilm reader, would be an absolute boon. And appropriate marking the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War. Personally, I'd like to see some of the East Anglian titles included.

Excellent idea I would like to see more local papers as we are researching over 70 men buried in local cemeteries and would appreciate more local papers for those years
For example
Redcar and Saltburn Times
Redcar free press

The Northern Echo 1914-1918 would be a good newspaper to add as it cover County Durham and North Yorkshire

Some WW1 Newspapers that covered North West Kent please. At present all the Kentish papers that are available are from teh South and East of the county.

Barrow-in-Furness for me too but we need to extend the year range as some soldiers came home but died of their injuries a year or two later and the fate of POWs wasn't always known immediately.

I am really interested in any Manchester City Newspapers and Barrow in Furness for 1914-1919

I agree with Mark. Local Newspapers are often the only source for finding out more details of those who served in the Great War, given that a very large proportion of military records have not survived. The centenary commemorations to be had over the next five years will mean that there will be a growing interest in Great War history. Of particular interest are casualty rolls as these list not just those that were killed, but others who were wounded, missing or taken as prisoners of war.
