I moved to Hulme in 1973 with my family from Wythenshawe, 3 years of age, saw my mom get bag snatched on stairwell outside our flat in Hulme 1978, our flat catching fire in early 80's at 2am, family escaped unharmed, skinhead gangs walking the streets of Hulme in the late 70's, anti fascist gangs fighting rascism mid 80's, Moss Side riots spreading to Hulme 1981, a ford capri hanging out of Abdul's shop in woodcock square, Heroin being a major problem in Hulme after the riots, football hooligan gangs from Man City fighting on cambridge street next to the mancunian way, hanging out in woodcock square in the early mid 80's, Loxford Boy's club on Newcastle street, Felix with his mad staff bulls, Gretny walk and Medlock court Moss side, Birley High school mid 80's. Rizla the tall jamaican guy dressed head to toe in colours, The Spinner's Arms, The Chequered flag, Clopton walk shops. Hulme Hippodrome 75p a pint mid eighties, Watching Cheech and chong's UP in Smoke in The Aaben, helping to save Viraj Mendis from deportation mid 80's, The kitchen and The PSV, Ripple wine, Community Charge and RDF playing at the Eagle NYE 1990. Crimewatch filming a reconstruction of a prostitute killed in the area early 90's, 1993 painted graffiti on launderette in Woodcock square then everywhere else up until 1998. The salutation green, The eagle pub, New age travellers, punx picnic, Dogs of heaven shows, Herbal tea parties at the adri, weekend long graffiti parties, the death slide, these are some of the major incidents i remember growing up in Hulme and some of it does sound shit and depressing but Hulme had a great community and good times were always had, in fact i remember avoiding parties at times cause i needed to go to work, it was also a no go zone but with a lot of positivity and community strength which today i really miss, i remember people saying, " how the hell can you live there ? " they will never know how beautiful Hulme really was, i am glad i was there to see it all, great days !

Hello. I am trying to chase details of a firm called William Lees & Sons, potters probably in Hanley area. I believe William may be my great great great grandfather. My great grandfather was Archibald Lees, born 8 April 1921 in Hanley and died in Fenton on 3 Feb 1945. His father also Archibald Lees was born about 1913 and died in Hanley on 1 Mar 1973. His father was William Lees which would put his birth probably about 1910 but he died in Hanley on 21 Dec 1986. I think it is this William Lees who is of the firm William Lees & Sons. All those mentoned were potters, china gilders etc. Can anyone in the Hanley and Stoke area give me any information. I would be most grateful. I do have some more information including some addresses which may help if you think you can help.Thank you
