How can we improve the way you find and search our newspapers?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Better Drop Down Menus

    Better drop down years. If you put 1914 in the first drop down menus the system should default to 1914 in the second

  2. List titles added the last 30 days in chronological order, not alphabetical

    If the newspaper titles added during the last 30 days were listed in chronological order, rather than alphabetical, it would be a lot easier to keep track of titles being added from day to day. As it is now, that's almost impossible.

  3. Search facility

    At the moment search facility is only available for publication place or county (or title). By selecting one place or county in a area you are limiting your search and by not selecting a place you could end up with numerous entries to wade through. Would it be possible to add a facility for country ie Scotland, England etc. Sometimes the closest newspaper to the issue did not provide the best article.

  4. Search by title of article

    Enable the ability to search for a word in the article title. Most other newspaper archives have this really useful facility

  5. Obsolete Welsh County - Clwyd

    The search facility only includes the obsolete county of Clwyd. The historical counties of flintshire and denbigh are ignored.

  6. Mark search results I have already viewed so it is more obvious

    Allow a facility for the system to "remember" which pages I have previously looked at. By ticking that page, or some other marking.

  7. Search improvement

    Better search selection. When selecting either a Publication place or title then restrict the Publication year to the dates that have been uploaded for the selected publication. Thus you should only be able to search in the appropriate range of a run of papers rather than searching and getting no results and wondering if it is the search term that is not located or if there is no papers in the area.

  8. Jump to next/previous instance of search term within a page

    Provide a next/previous buttons to enable to skip from an occurrence of a search term in a page to the next/previous occurrence of the search term. The move would focus on the search term and size to display just the column involved and a few lines around the search term.

    This will be very useful on images where most of the page is part of a single article.

  9. search terms to be within the same article

    Option to use search words where all words are only found in the same article and not on the whole page

  10. Search "Edit Article Text" and "Show Article Text"

    Provide a search function in the "Edit Article Text" and in the "Show Article Text" so you can find the text you are interested in. This is especially needed on long articles as it it often difficult to find the text that you require.

    I would love to be able to use wildcards. It's so difficult to guess what the mangled version of a name would be.

  13. BETTER SEARCHES (accuracy, control & operators)

    Have an advanced search like Google Advanced. When searching for 'all these words' that should mean that all of those words are in the article not just one of them.

  14. semantic search which recognises surnames, places etc

    The use of "" does not filter to surname only i.e. Brakes search comes up with all references to brakes.

  15. Allow restricting search to particular days of the week

    Restrict search to days of the week eg Monday so it would return Saturday football results.

    Filter results by more than one region. Events in the Southeast are likely to be in Southeast or London Papers

  18. Reward Manual Corrections to OCR-generated flaws

    There is little incentive to repair obvious flaws in OCR-generated plaintext other than the satisfaction of having done so. Awarding concessionary access to those willing to contribute such exacting labours would improve the accumulated corpus for everyone and render more accurate the search function -- which depends exclusively upon the plaintext version.

  19. Go back to same place on results page when an article has been reviewed

    when weve viewed an article and return to results page pls can you go back to the last position we were on in the page so we dont have to keep scrolling down all the time esp as some results are very similar

  20. Downloaded PDFs searchable

    The OCR - warts and all! - enables pages to be found - but when the PDF is downloaded it is just an image with no underlying OCR layer. Can the OCR not be included in the PDF?
