Newham Recorder
Great newspaper covering the East London area. Robert Balthrop's column provided a fascinating weekly look at the history of the area in particular.

My mother Edith Nash was born in Harcourt Rd in 1908 before the family moved to Morley Rd before 1911. My father Albert Bayliss was brought up in Holbrook Rd after the family moved there from Dersingham Avenue before 1917, when his sister Anne was born. Edith and Albert eventually got together and married at the Parish Church in 1936. They then bought a house in Rainham, Essex and were settled there before the start of WW2.
As I am still investigating family history I have noticed that the original house (No.96) where my mother was born in Harcourt Rd, and some around it, have gone and replaced with newer ones. Further along the road, from approximately No.80 downwards, the old style houses are still there. Does anybody know why the block, including No.96, was replaced ? Could it have been because of bomb damage during WW2 ? -

The archives show a different East End than there is today.

Both The Stratford Express and The Recorder are of great historical importance to folk who were either born, bred or spent their childhood and growing years in the Borough. Plenty of memories in the archives, which should be available and should be accessible. I myself have been seeking published memories from the 1950's.

Great historical content pertaining to life in East London (and previously Essex) and a strong reference for past events. I would like to see adverts for what groups/artists appeared at the Granada in East Ham and also articles on the Town Show from birth.

Newspaper archives should be kept for historical value and so people can research.

Am trying to track down a picture that was seen in the local paper approx 1958/9 that was headed 'Pygmalion goes to Burges Manor'.
It was a school play casting lots of pupils in their last year at the school.
I played the part of Albert Dolittle. Would love some help in same. -

In the early 70s a lorry carrying a full load of peaches had an accident in front of our house on the Romford Road, Forest Gate and shed its entire Load. The Recorder covered the story at the time and published a photograph of myself and my friends munching a peach each with great big grins on our faces. I would love to read that article and see that picture again.

Hello my name is Heather Hall, I was Heather Thomson I went to Essex county infant school Infant and Junior School from 1966 and had a lovely friend Elaine Piercy. We moved away to Ipswich and we lost touch. I think of Elaine very fondly and I'm just wondering if anyone here knows Elaine.
