Newspapers we should add next

Tell us what publications would be of most use to you. You can be as general (Victorian cycling magazines) or specific (South Wales Argus) as you wish! We take on board all of your suggestions but are bound by copyright restrictions and our agreements with publishers, these form the boundaries of what we may publish online.

  1. Wolverhampton Express and Star 1970’s

You say you prioritise papers due to their popularity in regard to votes then why have we only got 4 years available of the paper? frankly not good enough for a large city !!!

  3. More Northern cities with Post 1950s dates

Can we not see more dates published for the main northern cities - Manchester Evening News, Sheffield Star, Bradford Telegraph and Argus, Yorkshire Evening Post, Bolton News, Nottingham Evening Post, Middlesbrough Gazette, Sunderland Echo or the Hull Daily Mail, you are endlessly adding papers for small areas with little interest to most readers it’s time to start adding the main regional papers as only Liverpool and Newcastle are covered in any detail

  7. "The Town" newspaper edited by Renton NICHOLSON 1837 to 1840

"The Town" newspaper edited by Renton NICHOLSON (The Chief Lord Baron) ran between 1837 and 1840 focusing on Scandals and London Nightlife. Many of the topics written about in the paper were considered extremely vulgar at the time and it was often criticised for discussing these topics. Archibald Henning, who later worked for Punch, contributed many drawings of London residents to The Town. He often depicted controversial figures in London society on the first page of the paper. Ebenezer Landells was another early contributor who later moved to Punch. (Wikipeadia). This short run newspaper would offer a unique insight into…

  8. Northern Review 1887-1892

Northern Review was a Victorian journal covering all aspects of life in a weekly supplement. It's an incredibly interesting insight into life in the North East at the time, accompanied by many interesting sketches that are lacking from the main newspapers at the time such as the Gazette, the Northern Echo, the Northern Weekly Gazette and the Stockton Herald.

Crucially for the practical side of things, as there is no copyright on this publication as it has been defunct for so long, I don't believe there would be many obstacles in making it available online. The British Library hold copies…

  9. Volunteer Service Gazette 1878 and 1881

The years 1878 and 1881 are missinng from the 19thC coverage of the Volunteer Service Gazette. This is a unique newspaper providing history of the popular Volunteer Movement. I am not aware of any libraries that hold copies. Its content is invaluable to military, social and family historians and provides information not available in the National or Local press. Please close the gap in coverage by uploading these two missing years to your otherwise comprehensive coverage. Thanks. David

  13. Evening Gazette Middlesbrough 1960-90’s

Plenty of interest in the paper although I feel we may be slightly overlooked due to our proximity to Newcastle and the fact they have great coverage available , but we are a totally different entity and Middlesbrough News rarely made Newcastle papers so it’s important as we rely on these stories for gleaning historical records in our city . Also the Northern Echo paper is another great paper under developed on here

  14. Portsmouth Evening News 1956-1998

The archive include the Portsmouth Evening News up to1955, but we would really like to be able to continue our research up to more recent times! This paper covers quite a wide geographical area and is likely to be of interest to a large number of researchers and other individuals.

  15. Sports Gazette (Middlesbrough)

The Sports Gazette was the weekly sports supplement of the Gazette in Middlesbrough, I believe it started in 1890.

The British Library have copies from 1904 to 1937, and some stories and images for local sports teams can only be found within these pages. It would be an invaluable resource for sports historians with an interest in the North East to have these publications available as the information is quite simply available nowhere else.

It is possible that the earliest editions no longer exist, so it is very important to make sure the surviving publications are digitised so that they…
