  2. Tips & Resources for Researchers & Genealogists – How Do You Make the Most of the Archive?

I thought it might be useful to start a thread where we can share practical tips and resources that help when using the British Newspaper Archive for family history and research. Newspapers can be such a goldmine, but sometimes tricky to navigate—especially with older print styles and OCR errors.

I’m sure many of us are approaching the archive with different backgrounds—some for family history, others for local history or academic work. It would be great if we could build a resourceful discussion here that benefits beginners and experienced researchers alike.

Looking forward to hearing your methods, challenges, and success stories!…

  6. Exploring the Newspapers Available and Their Coverage Years

    Hello everyone,

I’m interested in understanding the full scope of newspapers available on the British Newspaper Archive. While I know the site hosts a vast collection, I’m curious about which specific newspapers are included and the exact years of coverage for each.
Are major national newspapers like The Times or The Guardian fully archived, and if not, which years are accessible?
What about regional newspapers? Are there certain counties or towns that are particularly well-represented?

Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge!

  7. Discussing the Quality of Scans and OCR Text

    Hi everyone,

I want to start a conversation about the quality of scans and OCR text in the British Newspaper Archive. Personally, I’ve noticed that the clarity of scans can vary a lot depending on the original paper, the condition of the page, and even the printing style of the time.

A few questions I’d love to hear your thoughts on
    1. How do you work around OCR errors when doing searches? Do you use wildcards, or just read through the scans manually?
    2. Have you noticed certain decades or newspapers that tend to scan particularly well (or badly)?

  8. Switch to previous and next issues when viewing search results in a newspaper issue

Usually I search for specific topics or events. Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to click on the previous or next issue, when you have opened a search result and navigating in one of the newspaper issues. The possibility to change to the previous or next issue would be very useful, as I often want to check whether there is anything about the topic in the previous or subsequent issue.

  9. Improving Search Filters for More Accurate Results

    Hello,

I’ve been making extensive use of the archive recently and really appreciate the vast collection. However, I’ve noticed that search results can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming, especially when dealing with common names or widely used terms. Even with date ranges and location filters applied, it can still take quite some time to find the exact article I’m looking for.

Would it be possible to introduce more advanced filtering options? For example, filters based on publication type (regional vs national), article length, or even the ability to exclude certain terms. I think these improvements would make research more efficient…

  10. Enlarge image area and remove distractions

Please enlarge the image area and remove the tools that sit on top. The image area is really small as it is. Also, please gray background. There are too many distractions in viewing the images.

  11. How to Search for Obituaries with Limited Information?

    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here might be able to offer some advice. I'm trying to locate an obituary for a distant relative who I believe passed away in the late 1950s or early 1960s, likely in the Manchester area. Unfortunately, I only have a rough estimate of the time period and a partial name — I know the surname (Thompson), and possibly the first initial (J or G).

I've tried some keyword combinations in the search bar, but I'm struggling to narrow it down without hundreds of unrelated results. Are there any tips or tricks for refining obituary searches…

  12. Correcting transcription errors

If I copy out an article, I like to correct transcription errors so others benefit from the corrected version,

But your system if very frustrating, as fast as I can correct errors then more appear.

I usually just copy to my PC and edit there so no one else benefits from my work.

Comments are limited to 500 characters so I cannot even paste the corrected version there.

  14. Requesting a rescan of images

How do we re request to have a page rescanned when half is missing, but is complete on next page?

Edinburgh Evening News - Monday 01 April 1912, Page 3 has the far column halved - but on page 4 the column on the edge is complete.

This is a scanning issue and could be corrected by a rescan

  15. Make it easy to scroll through the pages of a newspapers

I use the site for historical research, and so I might want to look at a series of newspapers around a specific date to see what was happening. It would be great to be able to scroll through a newspaper;s pages (paticularly when viewing on iPad) rather than the 3-4 clicks needed to flick between pages. I'm thinking similar to a Kindle experience - eg one click or tap to skip a page

  16. Web Site performance and OCR

Firstly I think you are doing a great thing with this archive; good job!
However my experience of trying to contribute to your project in a small way and correct the plethora of errors which your very basic OCR generates in the articles I am researching has been very frustrating. Reviewing and correcting a few thousand words is taking hours when it should take maybe only an hour if the performance of the website was quicker and if the user interface for editing had been better designed. In Microsoft Word or some similar software I can see all the errors…

  17. Voting for a publication instructions

My colleagues and myself have been struggling to vote for a newspaper to be recommended for digitisation. We are not computer illiterates but have found the voting process far from intuitive, particularly as you have to create a second password in order to vote. Do you have some clear instructions we could share with others who have been put off attempting to vote?

  18. Ability to Clip Articles

Ability to clip articles as opposed to downloading the page in its entirety without any boundaries for the information you're actually interested in preserving. Think Newspapers.com. For the price of admission the feature is sorely needed.

  19. Please put Newspaper title in downloaded filename

Currnently PDF files downloaded are in the form of BL0000564193810312510011.pdf - can the first ID be replaced with the newspaper title, please? e.g. BLDundeeCourier19381031251_0011.pdf - there is currently no way to link an image to a newspaper without manually viewing the image.
