2. Abysmal Transcriptions - focus on re-doing older papers before starting new ones.

   We are missing so many stories about our ancestors due to Abysmal Transcriptions. Yes, I can edit and update existing garbage to make more sense, but that does not help me find articles in the first place. If what is transcribed isn't anything approaching what is printed, the article will never be found except by sheer chance. Occasionally I have found an article by chance, then copied the image into google keep where it does a far better job of transcription than what is on this site. Now that there is AI (or rather large language models) the transcriptions from any of the specialised sites is superior to that.
   
   Why focus on new newspapers when there is already a treasure trove of unfindable information in what you have already scanned. Focus on re-doing older papers before starting new ones.

   For example - Bucksey (BCCKSBY or B<Kkiwr) and Househam (HOCSEHAM or Houehm), Dickinson (Dickinaoo) and Murchie (MurAie) are unlikely to ever find this record unless someone edits it for you.
   The only reason the middle marriage is correct is because I edited it - ONE of the 3 words Barton was correctly spelled!

   I'm hoping someone here might be able to offer some advice. I'm trying to locate an obituary for a distant relative who I believe passed away in the late 1950s or early 1960s, likely in the Manchester area. Unfortunately, I only have a rough estimate of the time period and a partial name — I know the surname (Thompson), and possibly the first initial (J or G).

   I've tried some keyword combinations in the search bar, but I'm struggling to narrow it down without hundreds of unrelated results. 9. Web Site performance and OCR

   Firstly I think you are doing a great thing with this archive; good job!
   However my experience of trying to contribute to your project in a small way and correct the plethora of errors which your very basic OCR generates in the articles I am researching has been very frustrating. Reviewing and correcting a few thousand words is taking hours when it should take maybe only an hour if the performance of the website was quicker and if the user interface for editing had been better designed. In Microsoft Word or some similar software I can see all the errors and easily correct them but the tortuous line by line interface on your website and the fact that each time you save you are taken back to the beginning of the article makes editing a real pain. Worse; during a long editing session, the performance of the website drops to a snail's pace with each character taking a long time to enter. Personally I think you should spend some money on this because however extensive the content, if you can't easily read and edit, the whole experience is frustrating. You also should look at the kind of AI that has been available for a while -to avoid your OCR making repeated errors like tbe instead of the. Its just requires some context sensitive logic and I'm certain there are solutions available. Very best of luck with it and I will persevere :) Simon

    When I search for a phrase, for example "W. Hunter" to get only hits for "W. Hunter" it is very annoying that I get endless hits for just "W." Can the search engine not be taught to ONLY look for "W. Hunter" ?

16. A Timeline, simple base line of world/UK event dates occurring at, or near the atricle date

    Place the articles in some kind of timeline, a simple baseline graph idea would help I suppose. I don't have a plan but whenever I find an article concerning an ancestor it would help to picture the time he was living in - who was on the throne, world action concerning Britain etc.
