Oldham
If population size determines ranking for digitisation then why for example is Oldham not included yet, which covers Saddleworth etc. and is many more than some of those you have done already?
-
The following titles are included in our digitisation plan for Oldham:
Illustrated Oldham Telegraph
Oldham Advertiser
Oldham Chronicle
Oldham Daily Standard and Northern Times
Oldham Evening Chronicle
Oldham Evening Express
Oldham Standard
World's Fair (Oldham)We currently have over 3,000 titles on our digitisation plan, and while these Oldham titles have been added, digitisation times vary depending on the accessibility of the material for digitisation. The majority of these titles require original image capture of hard copy holdings, unfortunately, this is the slowest form of digitisation.

43 supporting comments from users sincle someone requested Oldham Newspapers be included in your digitisation plans back in in 2014. Not one response from this website in reply to each comment. So here's my effort to remind the British Newspaper Archive of this serious omission:
A very large town in NW England, current population circa 244,000. Oldham was at the centre of the Cotton Industry and the Industrial Revolution, and many 19th Century political movements and events. Yet no newspaper online earlier than the Oldham Advertiser from 1986 onwards.
The Oldham Evening Chronice was established in 1854 and remained in print until 2017. It is therefore a vital source of information over the past 163 years.
The continued absence of scheduling this important local title is extremely disappointing, given the many obscure, low circulation, and recent publications currently being scanned and uploaded. Why is this so? -

The newspaper covers the development & growth of a town in the Industrial Age to become a cotton town producing over 10% of the world's cotton at one time.

I agree entirely that the absence of any Oldham titles is a big gap in your coverage.

Oldham’s a large town larger than many of the towns you have published papers for shame you won’t provide any sort of local paper for the locality

Would also love to see the Oldham Chronicle appear in the British Newspaper Archive. It's a town which has been part of a lot of important parts of British History and from a personal perspective I'd love to look for any articles relating to my family members.

I recently contacted the office of the Oldham Chronicle to try and access their archive and got this reply:
Unfortunately the archives we had for that era are no longer part of our collection.
In 2017 the newspaper moved to an online service only and we moved from the large premises we occupied in Oldham to smaller offices.
The records and archives have been donated to the Oldham borough and are currently being held by the council. For safety and preservation reasons they are currently in storage and not accessible to either ourselves or the public as they provide a catalogued history of our town over 163 years, it was a priority they were preserved for future generations.
Are you able to help and offer support to make these archives available? -

It would be great to see Oldham newspapers on this archive. It is a big gap in the archives. Are any Oldham papers planned in the near future?

Still no signs of Oldham newspapers on the archive. Is it in the pipeline to add them?
