Inwas born in portsmouth in 1962, many parts of the city have completely changed from when I grew up there.
The part of portsmouth I was born in (born at home malins road) was demolished in the 70s, I remember the bulldozers and brick dust, we watched as they knocked down my dads (rip) local pub the centaur and we were still living in our house when the bulldozers were only a few doors down.
I saw the area I lived in being slowly flattened all around. it was quite strange walking past derilict houses where my friends had lived when walking to school. wellington place Junior&infant school.

Born in Oxford, I moved to Portsmouth in 1952. My Father was in the army department constabulary, now the MOD Police, and we lived at 9, then 8, then 13 York Terrace, Hilsea in married quarters, my Father was based at Hilsea Depot opposite Old London Road. My Father came from Swadlincote but all of my mothers family came from Eastney originally, many in the Royal Marines at Eastney and Deal and one based on the Royal Yacht Britannia. My grandmother did a lot of needlework for the marines, and another Aunt worked for Cawtes the cleaners in their shop in Highland Road, almost opposite Eastney bus depot, as the trolleybuses stopped outside the shop you could look down into the shop and see her working. They all lived in Tokar street, Eastney. I was educated at St Francis school, Hilsea, now flats, Northern Parade School and the Northern Grammar school, all in Portsmouth. Long evenings playing football and cricket in the field behind York Terrace and bounded by Peronne Road and Bapaume Road bring back very many happy memories playing late into the summer evenings. Working at James Clarke and Eaton, built on former MOD land where my Father worked, Whitbreads, J.E.Smiths coal merchants, and eventually various plant hire companies over the years, I have now retired to Clanfield just outside Portsmouth. Portsmouth has changed beyond belief in many ways, but I still feel attracted to the city with many memories, mostly happy. I also worked for three years at the Portsmouth Ambulance Service main station on the Eastern Road, and after getting married, ran a newsagents shop firstly at Copnor, then North End. Would love to hear from anyone that knew me or people with similar memories.

Born in Oakwood Rd Hilsea In 1937with memories of watching Dog Fights in the sky from our Anderson Air Raid shelter during the early part of WW2 before going up to Dunstaffnage in Scotland in 1943 when my father who was a Shipwright in the Dockyard was posted there. Returning to Oakwood Rd when the war ended I went to Northern Parade School and then Hilsea Modern until leaving in August 1952 to start work for Curry's Ltd which lasted 46 years. Interrupted by 2 years National Service in The Royal Signals. Friday night was Big Band night at the Savoy Dance Hall dancing where you held and talked to your dance partner. Bands, Ted Heath, Eric Delaney, Chris Barber, many more including Johnny Dankworth , female singer Cleo Laine who played on the 31st May 1958 the night where I met my wife to be Mavis Langford who then lived in Waltham St. Fratton. A dance and a wife for 5/- not bad. Friday night The Savoy, Saturday night was always South Parade Pier with 2 dance halls. S.P.P was always the New Years Eve venue. Wednesday on a summers night open air dancing at the end of the pier. I married my wife 13th January 1962, St Marys Church, Fratton Rd the day Pompey was beaten 3-1 by W.B.A. 3rd round F.A. Cup at Fratton Park. Left Pompey in 1962 and now live in Brighton, but am still that Pompey supporter. Have fun and chocolate.

My grandparents William BREAM and Jane MARTIN were believed to have been buried in PORTSMOUTH. He in 1968 and she in 1978. Can anyone confirm this? I also have heard that several pubs in Portsmouth were owned by BREAMS. Does anyone know about this? Thanks

Im looking for any details on Canon Walter John Smith in the Portsmouth area. He was a church minister in the mid 1959s. His father was Walter Ernest Smith and his mother was Kate Cousins. I would love to know move about him if possible. I don't know when he was ordained so this is making it a little hard to trace him.
