A preview for the search results without having to go into the full page
It would be much better if you could hover over an entry after a search and have a small preview pop up showing the context of the match to your search criteria. This would be highly effective in reducing the number of "red herring" matches that you often have to go through.

Some way of searching for two words NEAR each other rather than just both appearing or a phrase
Some search systems have commands like NEAR4 to find two words with four words of each other.
All too often a search for two words finds then in completely different parts of the page.
47 votesWe have established a way of doing this through our search technology. Next steps are to start designing a user interface.

Reward Manual Corrections to OCR-generated flaws
There is little incentive to repair obvious flaws in OCR-generated plaintext other than the satisfaction of having done so. Awarding concessionary access to those willing to contribute such exacting labours would improve the accumulated corpus for everyone and render more accurate the search function -- which depends exclusively upon the plaintext version.

Search options
It might be difficult but I would like to see you introduce proximity searches, such as word x within so many words of word y.

Search by title of article
Enable the ability to search for a word in the article title. Most other newspaper archives have this really useful facility

Filter by more than one region
Filter results by more than one region. Events in the Southeast are likely to be in Southeast or London Papers

Downloaded PDFs searchable
The OCR - warts and all! - enables pages to be found - but when the PDF is downloaded it is just an image with no underlying OCR layer. Can the OCR not be included in the PDF?

Improve date entry
Other newspaper archives have a better date entry system where you can type in the year and day and month default to 'Any Month' etc .
One feature that would need some programming work but would be very useful is if I enter the start date as 1850 then then the end date drop down list started at 1850. I might alternative be better if the drop down list worked opposite ways around i.e. start date at the earliest date available and end date started at the latest date available.

Allow restricting search to particular days of the week
Restrict search to days of the week eg Monday so it would return Saturday football results.

Jump to next/previous instance of search term within a page
Provide a next/previous buttons to enable to skip from an occurrence of a search term in a page to the next/previous occurrence of the search term. The move would focus on the search term and size to display just the column involved and a few lines around the search term.
This will be very useful on images where most of the page is part of a single article.
3 votesGood suggestion. We will investigate how hard this will be to do.

Why am I unable to focus the print once I have found the page. The small icon on the top left of the screen disappears after two seconds. A
Help. The site is excellent on tracking items, but the size control fades after two seconds, and it is impossible to focus the print. This effectively means the service is of no use to me. Help.

Please be able to scroll up or down on pages
I find it very annoying that now when I click on an article, it shows the newspaper page but when I zoom in it only zooms the center of the page and it can't be scrolled up or down.It then has to be downloaded and the highlighted section disappears.

The ability to restrict a search to titles added in a specific period is unreliable.
Some titles appear when an otherwise identical search is conducted in two or more distinct periods. (It may be that some titles are omitted but this cannot be tested by the user). The problem was first reported to you many months ago but remains as at 25 Sept.2017. Users should not be reliant on this search facility until you can advise the problem has been corrected.

Edition search
I am looking for an article in the Western Gazette, published Friday 12 December 1902 and was pleased to find it listed on your website. However, having paid my subscription and started to look at the pages, I discovered that this is the "Bournemouth, Hants & E.Dorset Edition", which I soon realised is of no use to me as the article I am looking for relates to Yeovil. Your search criteria do not specify the Edition and the results are therefore inaccurate and misleading, so I have wasted my time and money.

Add number of matches to summary
It would be very useful to know how many matches within an article there are for the search criteria entered.

Hastings & St Leonards Observer
Please can we have the entire copy of each edition of the Hastings & St Leonards Observer. I am a paid up user and am researching suffragettes in Hastings. However, the site only seems to have the first 4 pages of the editions (1870-1914) that I am looking at.

"Contact us" - 'Sorry! The page you were looking for was not found'
I would like to make a complaint. However, when I try your "Contact us" - at the bottom of your page, I get: 'Sorry! The page you were looking for was not found'
This is NOT good enough. I have a right to complain and have my complaint dealt with in person. Please contact me.
