I came across the website by accident. Since moving into the area 2 years ago I always wordered why the landscape below Oaklands Road appeared the way it does. I've been told that Oakland Primary school once stood opposite Unity Quarter and the new estate is being built on the site of Kersal High School: that's all I knew, but thanks to you guys I now knew alot more about the area.. The stories I've read and pictures I've seen are fascinating and extremely interesting. Shame on Salford Council to have allowed the area to be left unkept like they have with so much history.

Can I just say what a fantastic / nostalgic site! i was a student in Oaklands Halls in the early 1980s. Whilst not originally from the Salford area, the surrounding area always fascinated me. We had superb views from the Halls of Residence over the Kersal Flats, the old racecourse, and the University and Manchester City Centre in the background. Some great times were had in various local hostelries (The Star Inn, The Plough, The Kersal Hotel).
I moved away for a few years, but now live only a few miles away. It is so sad to see how much the area has changed - not only have the Halls and flats gone, but the colliery and many of the aforementioned pubs.
Alas, I don't have many photos of the Halls from my time there, so if anyone reading reading has any old photos I would love to see them! -

Doesn’t sit well with me
A larger city than Liverpool, Dublin or Aberdeen yet with nowhere the amount of coverage given to these areas

Please include all the decades
I lived in Hodder Square Manchester from 1990 to 1992. best years of my life - everyone else lived there too and post hacienda or wherever was just spent dropping round your mates' flats! Possibly via a quick detour to one of the Epping Walk parties! Spent mucho time lounging around the adventure playground at sunrise! I moved out too soon to get rehoused in one of the new flats - should have stayed but the cockroaches got too much - little devils! Now when I get the bus into town I lose my bearings - can't work out where's where

I moved to Hulme in 1973 with my family from Wythenshawe, 3 years of age, saw my mom get bag snatched on stairwell outside our flat in Hulme 1978, our flat catching fire in early 80's at 2am, family escaped unharmed, skinhead gangs walking the streets of Hulme in the late 70's, anti fascist gangs fighting rascism mid 80's, Moss Side riots spreading to Hulme 1981, a ford capri hanging out of Abdul's shop in woodcock square, Heroin being a major problem in Hulme after the riots, football hooligan gangs from Man City fighting on cambridge street next to the mancunian way, hanging out in woodcock square in the early mid 80's, Loxford Boy's club on Newcastle street, Felix with his mad staff bulls, Gretny walk and Medlock court Moss side, Birley High school mid 80's. Rizla the tall jamaican guy dressed head to toe in colours, The Spinner's Arms, The Chequered flag, Clopton walk shops. Hulme Hippodrome 75p a pint mid eighties, Watching Cheech and chong's UP in Smoke in The Aaben, helping to save Viraj Mendis from deportation mid 80's, The kitchen and The PSV, Ripple wine, Community Charge and RDF playing at the Eagle NYE 1990. Crimewatch filming a reconstruction of a prostitute killed in the area early 90's, 1993 painted graffiti on launderette in Woodcock square then everywhere else up until 1998. The salutation green, The eagle pub, New age travellers, punx picnic, Dogs of heaven shows, Herbal tea parties at the adri, weekend long graffiti parties, the death slide, these are some of the major incidents i remember growing up in Hulme and some of it does sound shit and depressing but Hulme had a great community and good times were always had, in fact i remember avoiding parties at times cause i needed to go to work, it was also a no go zone but with a lot of positivity and community strength which today i really miss, i remember people saying, " how the hell can you live there ? " they will never know how beautiful Hulme really was, i am glad i was there to see it all, great days !

Lived in Hulme Manchester 84-87….what a great place. I lived in William Kent and Scarth Walk. So many memories - set me up for life. - Jamie setting up Kitchen studios in Charles Barry, I remember helping stick the egg boxes on the wall, recording a song with EJ…was that the same Kitchen that became the club??. I recall Jamie taking a jack hammer to the wall of his flat to start a club?….but that resulted in him getting all his studio gear knicked? Jamie Nicholoson where are you? - Playing pool in the Iron Duke….the day I left Manchester the barman (Hopton?) did a lock-in and gave us bottle of Southern Comfort to share - Posing in the White Horse, Hamrick serving behind the bar and remember "Jimmy", he could play pool well even when pissed. One night he was so gone he asked which part of Glasgow he was in - Just drinking in The Junction, The Grants, - Scoring in the Spinners - The PSV, Hacienda - Salmon Taxis and their chicken - The Doberman on the roof of the Henry Royce (I remember the day it fell off!) - Falling white goods!!! - The old guy who moved into one of the lifts on William Kent (a lift that worked!) - The fires, Frances and I had to persuade the guy next door to us to jump of his 6th floor balcony in William Kent down to our 5th floor balcony to avoid being burned to death (we did catch him!). - Oh and the penguins - remember them…At the top of our stair well in William Kent "You are now at the top of the very bottom"….And all those people I can just remember (in no particular order!)…Ras, EJ, Brian, Jem, Barbara, Helen, Frances, Cathy, Chris, Danny, Alex, Hamrick, Jamie, Mandy, Sean, Pete, Olivia, Steve, Steve, Hugo, Anne, Marie….and the rest of you.

Hi before all you Mancunians Jump on me I know that Manchester and Salford are two places, but there is a reason for my heading :-)
I have been googling all the afternoon to find the names of any newspapers being published in the Manchester and or Salford area in 1973. but without successs.
Cany anyone help with some titles and the possible location of filmed copies which are available for reading.
My putative grandfather Peter McKie was brought up before the Salford or Manchester Quarter Sessions on 14 April 1973 charged with theft and receiving. I am hoping to find a record of the case in the hope that it mentions his birthplace. My grandfather appears on all the censuses from 1955 to 1971 and each time said his place of birth was Scotland !
This is why I need some other source for a birthplace- I have two possible candidates on the OPRs but hope to eliminate one of them at some stage.
