My Paternal Grandfather, George Henry Thurgood b1882 lived in Meeting House Lane in 1907 and married Ethel Louisa Monk. He had not been back long from South Africa where he had fought in the 2nd Boer War.They had 3 boys, and then he was sent to France in 1914. He returned to live until 1971 in Peckham; mainly in Peckham Park Road. Any news of him, particularly prior to joining up in the first place as I do not know where he was born, would be much appreciated

To end the endless Scottish monotony
This is an important paper for a large area of
South London and should be considered how many really want access to the Isle of Skye times or the Orkneys Herald as beautiful as they may be -

My Uncle, George West owned a ladies hairdrssers shop on Canal Bridge, Peckham in the 1960s. He was very innovative and produced his own 'permanent wave' formula. I wonder if anyone has any stories about his emporium! Thank you.

Im looking for information regarding an ancestor - Christina McGilvrey (or some variant) born on 19th March 1920 at Catford. Registered Records and baptised on 6th April 1926. Her mother was Mary Kelly from Southwark, married to Malcolm McGilvrey on 2nd February 1939. Malcolm and family emigrated to Canada in the mid-1960s and I would love to know more about where they came from and why they left

Jessie Ellis lived in 11,Hooks Road, Peckam in 1938. She was the wife/ partner of William Golding. She had a son named George Golding in 1947. I can find no trace of her in marriage records, so I believe that. she may have only lived with WG a short while.

Great Site - found the history really good, but am a bit jealous because I had intended to do something similar. Still, why invent the wheel, I'll make do with running a link from my own site. I have lived in Churchside Close in the Valley for years, and spent the first 20 or so years working on the airport before going out and getting a proper job. Now running my own business as a Independent Financial and Mortgage Adviser at CIC Financial Solutions, in the village (or is it a Town now?) Would really like to see more old photos of the area - any chance of these in the History section

I come from the Sheppy family who lived in the valley from 1947 to 1959: one of the "old" families. Anyone out there remember us all? We went to Mr Huckles school and remember Mrs Comfort, Mrs Bradford and Mr Kelly. The history section totally misses out the hey day of post-war RAF Biggin Hill with it's Meteors and Hawker Hunters roaring thru the skies. Great to know I didn't dream it all

Would like to say that the site is very good and I agree about Biggin Hill should have a museum, It is a shame that places like Biggin and Kenley are just left to the odd book or people of the time remembering, cos lets face it as time marches on they will not live for ever. I feel it should be remembered in a way that all ages can appreciate, and what better than to have a museum at an old ww2 air field.

In the 1960's a lady called Mrs Orme, set up The Hillsiders Youth Club which met every Friday in the W.I.Hall in Lebanon Gardens. It got a lot of support from the local youth and also from those of Westerham. This lovely lady also organised a carnival, whose Queen was picked from the members. Sadly Mrs Orme left the area and the Biggin Hill Social Club became the venue. I believe one David Bowie played in a group at a Youth Club dance in his teens.

I’m looking for information on Elizabeth Green and her father William Walter Green. Elizabeth was born in Rotherhithe about 1943. On 4 June 1967 she married James Barker at the Parish Church of St Olave, Southwark. James came from West Dereham, Norfolk and the couple moved back there to live. William Walter Green is described as a mariner on the marriage certificate, but that's all I know about him. I can't find him or Elizabeth in the 1841 or 1851 censuses. Although James and Elizabeth stayed in West Dereham, their daughter Agnes married Benjamin Hadad Humphreys from Rotherhithe and moved there to live

Hi everyone - I have this family photo but only know a few people in it. My granddad is the second man on the far right of the picture and my nan is standing behind him holding a baby (my mum). My granddad's elder sister Ethel is in the back row on the far right and I think she has her arm around her husband, Sidney Murrell. I am trying to find out who got married - I have tried his other sister Frances and sent for the marriage certificate only to find out it is not the right one. I am now trying to find out if it is his elder brother Charles who got married - I know it is around the 1943 time because of the age of my mum in the photo (she was born on 16.10.1941). I have looked up a few marriages for Charles Jones on freebmd and wonder if anyone would be able to look to see if Charles Jones' father is called Thomas William Jones in any of them. Here are the details of some of the Charles Jones marriages around that time (as I said before the family lived around the Peckham Camberwell area so I am assuming it would have been around there. If anyone could please help I would be very grateful. Thank You

Hi there,
Can anyone else decipher this address? I've tried looking at street maps and googled variations on this address, but I'm stumped. Perhaps the street no longer exists. It was handwritten on the side of a Certificate of 1968 to register my great grandmother at school. The family lived in the Camberwell area of London by 1978. Any help greatly appreciated
