How can we improve The British Newspaper Archive?

  1. Transcriptions - focus on re-doing older papers before starting new ones.

    We are missing so many stories about our ancestors due to Abysmal Transcriptions. Yes, I can edit and update existing garbage to make more sense, but that does not help me find articles in the first place. If what is transcribed isn't anything approaching what is printed, the article will never be found except by sheer chance. Occasionally I have found an article by chance, then copied the image into google keep where it does a far better job of transcription than what is on this site.   3. How 'pages remaining' are calculated

    I had a bad experience using the site today. I found the article I wanted but when the system took me to the newspaper I couldn't find the specific article. I then seemed to run down my page view allowance of 40 pages in no time at all. I think the page view option should just charge once a page is selected and printed. Any chance of a refund this time as the system didn't even send me to the correct newspaper page.

  5. Proposal for Enhancing The British Newspaper Archive

    Hello esteemed community and The British Newspaper Archive administration!

    I'd like to share an idea for further improving our newspaper archive https://blog.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/2023/12/20/one-million-new-free-to-view-pages-join-the-archive/. We all value access to historical information, and I've been thinking about how to make this experience even more convenient and beneficial.I believe that enhancing the search system could make our interaction with the archive more efficient. I suggest adding advanced search options, such as filters for date ranges, specific newspapers, and regions. This would help users find information more quickly and accurately, making it easier to navigate and utilize the archive.

  6. The newspapers you already claim to have on your site

    Such misleading information your system has about what dates are covered.

    It says you have Cambridge Independent Press 1839 - 1950, BUT YOU DO NOT. Only the odd year after 1900.

    Again, Cambridge Daily News 1889 - 1994 but not all years.

    It is astoundingly annoying to realise that the reason I cannot find an item is that you are missing those years. Especially when I found so much on a free weekend at newspapers.com!

  7. BNA Library Access at Home

    During the current lockdown, many public libraries that offer Ancestry and Find My Past but only in library buildings (which are now closed) are offering the same service to library members in their homes. You just have to log in to your library account, and then enter the username and password you are given.
    How about the BNA doing the same thing?

  8. Improve resolution of PDFs, or just let us download the original image

    The PDFs we get to download now are in some cases completely unreadable because the image resolution is far too low. This is especially disappointing when you save the PDF, and come back to do some work from it later on only to find it's a unusable.

    Why can't we download high resolution images instead?

  10. Frequent email tips rather than news of how many more papers have been added

    Frequent emails "How to Search" tips. I spend hours trying to get the right combinations of search term(s) into the correct box(es) that will render desired hits.

    This facility should already be there and you can also allow your browser to remember the username and password you use to sign in. If you’re having any problems with this, please do get in contact with Customer Support.

  12. I have an unlimited account. So far this morning twice a search has left me on a blank page with "no data available" message.

    HELP! I have an unlimited account. Twice this morning searches resulted in blank pages with "no data available" statement. Twice again on another search I got the message to tell you that there was error "viewer/bl/00000346/18740701/021/00003." What now????!!!! Brenda Turner

  13. Blue boxes

    I would like to suggest you stop using the blue boxes the highlight the search terms used when viewing a article. Sometimes it blocks out the entire word and makes it harder to read.

  14. Your SUMMER01 offer does not work. You should have a section for help and advice which is of some use.

    No good having a special offer if one cannot take it up. I have tried three times to pay the £1 sub, but each time I get taken back to a panel which says "is it for myself, or a gift?" Then the whole tyhing time expires.

    Have pages from The Yorkshire Telgraph and Star for October 1914 found using my iPad at home but when I go to the main home computer this title is not even in the list of newspapers! What's happening?

    You should inform new customers that they have been put on auto renewal when signing up & inform them prior to doing so that you are about to take the next payment. This would allow naïve or trusting customers to cancel there subscription.

    Hello,

    You can vote on any title you like using the “newspapers we should add next”. As long as it is a title from Britain & Ireland (up to 1920) it should in theory be available to us.
