numbers of articles
It would be most helpful to have some kind of running total of the numbers of articles consulted/saved

Search "Edit Article Text" and "Show Article Text"
Provide a search function in the "Edit Article Text" and in the "Show Article Text" so you can find the text you are interested in. This is especially needed on long articles as it it often difficult to find the text that you require.

Search improvement
Better search selection. When selecting either a Publication place or title then restrict the Publication year to the dates that have been uploaded for the selected publication. Thus you should only be able to search in the appropriate range of a run of papers rather than searching and getting no results and wondering if it is the search term that is not located or if there is no papers in the area.

Selecting Dates
Make it easier to go to a required year rather than having to scroll through all years, and set the 'To' year for the publication date to the year specified in 'From' field thus reduce the amount of scrolling needed.

Flag any missing editions (gaps in the collection) when you search a run of dates of a particular paper.

RSS feed for search terms
An RSS feed for search terms, such as exists on the Australian Trove website, would be very useful. If it existed, I'd be notified automatically when new content appears which is relevant to my interests.

I am looking for a relatives death in 1962, but all I can do is remove the years from 1950-1999.
Why can't I get into the 1960's archives. All it will allow me to do is remove the years from 1950-1999.

Search button
"Save this search" button is more prominent than the "search" button. This means more searches than intended are saved. An "Unsave searches" option might help.

Hastings & St Leonards Observer
Please can we have the entire copy of each edition of the Hastings & St Leonards Observer. I am a paid up user and am researching suffragettes in Hastings. However, the site only seems to have the first 4 pages of the editions (1870-1914) that I am looking at.

Allow name search for names ending in 's' without it being assumed to be plural
There needs to be some mechanism to allow names that end in 's' to be searched without it being assumed it is the plural of that word. I have been searching for 'Lunds', a place in Yorkshire, but it always includes the word 'Lund' even with quotation marks. Allowing a search for names ending in 's' would dramatically reduce the number of results and speed up a search.

The addition of an option to refine a search by page number
The addition of an option to refine a search by page number.
This would be of great assistance in refining search results when the information sought is always found on a give page of a given newspaper.
For instance, the local newspaper I view the most has only four pages with the local news I am interested being almost always found on the back/fourth page. And I'm sure it would be of assistance in others ways for other users too.3 votes -
Exact search - not exact
Great site, great info - poor search. Exact search = not exact!

Perhaps a search engine that isn't incompetent?
Using the advanced search and with Exact search ticked for Mourne and Croft in "Search all words" and mourning in "Exclude words" brings up no results at all.
I wish there was a decent alternative to your dismal service.

Newcastle Guardian and Silverdale, Chesterton and Audley Chronicle
This may be easier for people to find if you put it under Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire rather than Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Northumberland. Obviously no-one at BNA realised there is more than one Newcastle in England

Why do the search abilities on FindMyPast not apply to the BritishNewspaperArchive if this is a collaboration?
Apparently, in FindMyPast, you can use ? for a single wildcard character, ?? for two wildcard characters, or * for unlimited wildcard characters. Even more interesting is you can search and allow words between the search words as follows:
“suton coldfield rail crash”~0 – terms must be right next to each other
“suton coldfield rail crash”~1 – could be up to 1 word between terms
“suton coldfield rail crash”~2 – could be up to 2 word between termsThis would be SUPER helpful.

Jump to next/previous instance of search term within a page
Provide a next/previous buttons to enable to skip from an occurrence of a search term in a page to the next/previous occurrence of the search term. The move would focus on the search term and size to display just the column involved and a few lines around the search term.
This will be very useful on images where most of the page is part of a single article.
3 votesGood suggestion. We will investigate how hard this will be to do.
