How to optimize user experience and page load speed for an old newspaper archive
Hi everyone,
I am managing Steal Brainrot Game website that archives scans and articles from old newspapers, similar to the British Newspaper Archive content. I am currently experiencing a few issues and would like to get some feedback from the community:
Page load speed: Some pages take several seconds to open, especially those containing high-quality scans. Does anyone have any experience in optimizing images or lazy loading while maintaining scan quality?
Searching for content: When users search for old articles, sometimes the results are inaccurate or too general. Has anyone implemented advanced search, filtering by date/genre, effectively?
Layout and UX:…

Suggestions for Improving Search Accuracy on Historical Newspaper Archives
Hi everyone,
I’ve been exploring the British Newspaper Archive and noticed that some search queries, especially for regional newspapers from the early 1900s, sometimes return incomplete or inaccurate results.
I’m curious if others have found effective strategies or settings to improve search accuracy, like using advanced filters, Boolean operators, or specific keyword formats.
Are there any updates planned for the PolyTrack search algorithm or tools within the archive that can help refine results for researchers focusing on local history?
I’d love to hear your tips, experiences, or workarounds — anything that could make historical research smoother and more precise.1 vote -

Enhancing Accessibility and Search Efficiency
One key improvement would be to enhance the search functionality — for example, adding more advanced filters (by topic, person, or newspaper type) and improving OCR accuracy, especially for older or damaged pages. It would also be great to make the interface more responsive and user-friendly on mobile devices. Finally, offering more flexible subscription options or limited free previews could encourage broader public use and engagement.

How to Search for Obituaries with Limited Information?
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone here might be able to offer some advice. I'm trying to locate an obituary for a distant relative who I believe passed away in the late 1950s or early 1960s, likely in the Manchester area. Unfortunately, I only have a rough estimate of the time period and a partial name — I know the surname (Thompson), and possibly the first initial (J or G).
I've tried some keyword combinations in the search bar, but I'm struggling to narrow it down without hundreds of unrelated results. Are there any tips or tricks for refining obituary searches…

Web Site performance and OCR
Firstly I think you are doing a great thing with this archive; good job!
However my experience of trying to contribute to your project in a small way and correct the plethora of errors which your very basic OCR generates in the articles I am researching has been very frustrating. Reviewing and correcting a few thousand words is taking hours when it should take maybe only an hour if the performance of the website was quicker and if the user interface for editing had been better designed. In Microsoft Word or some similar software I can see all the errors…7 votes -
