The answer is simple: they make more money keeping them separate. I, too, prefer the BNA search facility to the newspaper one on FMP, but it is significantly more expensive to have them as separate subscriptions - especially after the 25% increase in the BNA price in two years.

It's frankly crazy that the two search engines are so different - as I understand it, FMP & the BNA are the same company. I see your suggestion was 'Pending - for future development' nearly TEN YEARS ago! Needless to say, nothing has happened in the decade since. All the BNA's energy goes into uploading new pages - as far as anything else is concerned (e.g. improving the terrible OCR), they avoid doing anything. I didn't mind so much when the price was stable, but with recent price hikes it's sadly time to leave, and try and make do with the FMP version.

I very much agree. An abuse of the meaning of the word 'exact', incredibly time-consuming, and absolutely infuriating.

Two and half years on, nothing appear to be happening with regard to this - why not? I strongly support the idea of being able to use wildcards - with substantial (and inevitable) OCR misreadings in earlier newspapers, a huge number of positive results are missed. This seriously reduces the usefulness of the site, and ultimately raises the question of whether it is worth continuing with my subscription.

Local correspondents sent some Oldham stories to the Manchester papers up till the 1850s, but the meteoric expansion of the town thereafter naturally spawned its own local papers - the population increased by over 52% between 1851 & 1861 alone, and between 1851 and 1891 more than tripled from 77K to nearly 233K. I find it hard to understand why this important place has so far been neglected.

The BL has an excellent run of The Oldham Chronicle from 1854 already on microform - surely for such an important boom town this would be an obvious one to give us, and less complex than those needing scanning from scratch?

There are several Oldham request threads here - I am adding my votes to this one as the largest (though another has been saying for a long time it is 'under review')

I would concur with other comments - Whitehaven, in, particular, was an immensely important town. To my mind - and I'm a Londoner - Cumbria is badly under-represented here so far. You seem to be obsessed with Ireland, though.
